A young university student underwent successful surgery today after being attacked by police during a dawn raid on campers protesting government plans to cut down trees in Taksim Gezi Park.

Hazar Berk Büyüktunca's family and friends were waiting for him at Şişli Etfal Hospital in Istanbul during the operation.

He had received injuries to his ears and genital area after entering an altercation with police.

His situation was reported as stable, but he could remain at hospital under medical care for a couple of days, according to a hospital source.

Büyüktunca was among a group of young demonstrators who spent a third night at the park in an effort to halt the controversial demolition.

True Turk, why is it so hard for you to believe that 10,000 + people would rather have a green space of nature instead of Istanbul's 100th shopping mall/AVM? People caring about nature and freedom is so hard for you to comprehend, that you believe it must be the work of "foreign provectueur"? Nationalism really is illogical....

Although I strongly believe that these demonstrations are provoked by foreign agent provocatuers like the ones that write comments here, I also believe that our police should practice restraint. It only serves the purposes of Turkeys enemies that often pour out their impotent hate in these columns.

The city of Istanbul is making a big mistake destroying the green areas within the city. Green areas are not only the lungs of the city but add considerable attractiveness to the urban setting. for example, one of the most popular sites of New York City is actually Central Park. To me, that is the jewel of NYC.

And we wonder why there is an eventual backlash against this type of Nazi behavior??? Very sad, but not surprising.

There is a real deterioration in social peace in Turkey. Can an administration be this brutal to its own people?

The military had decided to a large extent to let go of some of their power in the name of democracy and because of pressure from the U.S. and the European Union that Erdogan claims he wants to join when he's focused on destroying a park to build some Ottoman barracks? The people want their park. He's abusing the power that was given to him.
