Prosecutor demands freezing assets of over 3,000 judges, prosecutors

The chief prosecutor of Ankara had demanded the assets of 3,049 judges and prosecutors detained as part of a probe into their alleged links with the Fethullahist Terror Organization (FETÖ) be frozen, the prosecutor’s office has announced. The asset freeze included vehicles, bank accounts, all types of claims, valuable papers, partnership interests in any firms and safe deposit boxes.
The suspected judges and prosecutors had already been suspended by the Supreme Council of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK) and later detained in connection with the failed coup attempt of July 15, believed to have been masterminded by U.S.-based Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen and his accomplices within the Turkish military.
Thousands of judges and prosecutors were suspended from their duties following the failed coup attempt and the Justice Ministry announced plans to appoint a total of 5,110 new judges and prosecutors next month, in order to avoid disruptions in judicial processes.
