Police in the southern province of Hatay detained four Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) suspects on Aug. 19, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

Police and intelligence units launched a joint operation in the İskenderun-Antakya highway and later stopped a vehicle.

Four suspects inside surrendered to the police but another attempted to attack security units. He was subsequently shot and succumbed to his wounds in the hospital.

Three of the suspects were Turkish-origin while the other two were Syrian origin, the agency said.

The road meanwhile was briefly blocked to traffic during the operation.

Bomb disposal experts also conducted searches inside the vehicle but could not found any explosive material.
