The outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) attacked one school in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır and eight others in the southeastern province of Şırnak’s İdil district with Molotov cocktails and handmade bombs Oct. 9.

One student and two teachers were injured in the attacks in Diyarbakır, and two students were injured in İdil. The attacks caused great fear and panic among students and teachers.

PKK supporters attacked the Şehitlik High school in central Diyarbakır at 8:30 a.m. About ten masked people entered the school and threw their bombs into an administrators’ office and a teachers’ meeting room. The fire caused by the bombs was extinguished before it spread.

The attack occurred while the students were on a break, but two teachers and one student were injured. After the attack the students were sent home and police began a detailed investigation, beginning with collecting footage from the school’s surveillance cameras in order to identify the attackers.

In the İdil district of Şırnak, PKK supporters attacked Bener Cordan, Atatürk, Fatih, Cumhuriyet and Anafartalar Primary schools and İdil High School, Multi-Programmed High School and Industrial-Vocational School simultaneously at 7 a.m. Two students at primary schools were injured by Molotov cocktails and were sent to İdil State Hospital. Police took strict security measures in the province following the attack.
