Suspected members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) have kidnapped a substitute teacher and a village guard after stopping their vehicles on a road in the southeastern province of Şırnak’s Beytüşşebap district late on Oct. 12.

PKK militants were stopping cars along the road in order to perform identity checks and propagandize on behalf of the organization. After stopping the cars the militants kidnapped a woman teacher identified as Filiz Sümer, as well as a village guard identified as Nesim Timur, before disappearing into the mountains. Police have launched an investigation into the kidnapping.

A group of PKK members also blocked the Tunceli-Erzincan road on Oct. 13, torching a truck. They stopped a TIR truck and placed it in the middle of the road after installing homemade bombs in it, blocking traffic in both directions. The group then fled into the mountains. An operation to find them has been launched in the region. Also, in Şırnak province’s Silopi district a group of PKK members raided a private construction site on the slopes of Cudi Mountain on Oct. 13, torching 11 vehicles.
