Two-year study spots 5,697 cultural assets in Turkey's eastern Black Sea region

“We have managed to register both existing and newly identified assets to the inventory list. This has become an unprecedented work to identify and register the assets of an unrivalled region in the natural and cultural sense,” said Yusuf Mengi, the head of DOKAP.
“We have taken the initiative to spread this model throughout the whole country. This will provide important data for regional development. We acted as if we were discovering the Black Sea region for the first time and approached the natural heritage from a different point of view,” he added.
As part of the project, cultural and natural assets within a 70,000-kilometer range were identified and registered.
Over 320,000 photographs were taken along with a 42,000-minute-long video footage.
More than 70 percent of registered assets were determined to be unregistered, Mengi stressed, adding that some assets were lost because they weren’t registered.
The cultural inventory of the Black Sea was categorized under four headings including natural assets as well.
After research and fieldwork following that, 309 new natural assets were identified and registered, making the total number of registrations to reach 741, comprising of caves, waterfalls, monumental trees, underground cities and canyons.
While some 64 natural assets were detected to be unregistered, others were said to be lost due to natural disasters and impairments during several construction works. (Photos: Demirören News Agency)
