Tourists flock to tomb of Ottoman Empire’s founders in Bursa
More than a million people visited the tombs of the Ottoman Empire in the northwestern Turkish city of Bursa last year. Here is the photo story from the state-run Anadolu Agency...
Some 266,000 people reportedly visited the tombs of Osman I and his son Orhan.
Osman I, who is known as Osman Gazi in Turkish, died in 1323 or 1324 and was initially buried in the tomb of his father Ertuğrul Gazi in Söğüt.
His remains were carried to Bursa after his son conquered the city.
The father and son’s tombs are today at Gümüşlü Kümbet (Silver Cupola), which was built on an old Byzantine chapel.
The complex was damaged in a fire in 1801 and an earthquake in 1855. It was repaired in 1863 with an order from Sultan Abdülaziz.
