Thousands of dead fish washed ashore in River Asi
Thousands of dead fish have washed ashore on River Asi in the southern province of Hatay, local fishers said on Sept. 22.
The provincial directorate of agriculture in Hatay, which borders Syria, has started an investigation, state-run Anadolu Agency reported.
The samples of dead fish and water taken from the area where the river reaches the Mediterranean Sea, will be examined, it added.
Remzi Şat, one of the local fishermen, said they notified the authorities when they saw thousands of dead fish on the water surface in the early hours of Sept. 22.
“It was like a blossom on the water surface. All the fish were dead. It was like snow on the Tekebaşı shore. It’s all due to the accumulated factory waste. They accumulated them and then poisoned this place by leaking all of it in one breath,” he said.
River Asi, which was called Orontes in ancient times, begins in the Beqaa Valley in Lebanon, flows through Syria, and enters Turkey, where it meets the Mediterranean Sea.
