The historic building named “Pirinç Han” (Rice Inn) had been restored by authorities based on its original form before it had been damaged in the 1855 earthquake, Demirören News Agency reported on Oct. 17.
The state rented 77 shops inside the inn to locals, but some of them opted to replace the wooden doors with metal ones.
Music teacher Murat Çapkın, one of the tenants, defended himself, saying the metal door was needed to protect valuable musical equipment kept inside.
Other tenants, however, filed complaints, stressing they needed to apply for official permission to make even the most minor changes on the structure. “These doors look so ugly,” a tenant told the agency.
The metal doors were removed and replaced by wooden ones amid outcry on Oct. 18.
