‘Leaning’ apartment buildings in Turkey’s north raise concerns following deadly Istanbul collapse
Four apartment buildings in the northern Turkish province of Rize have started to lean amid growing worries in the wake of a deadly collapse in Istanbul. Click through for the story in photos...
Demirören News Agency reported Feb. 12 that there are 96 apartments in the leaning buildings in the Engindere neighborhood.
Residents who put makeshift iron supports on the lower sides of the buildings said they wanted the government to declare the area an urban transformation zone.
The buildings were constructed in the 1980s after the sea coast was filled.
The official declaration of urban renewal would give the apartment owners financially favorable conditions to demolish and rebuild their homes through contractors.
An eight-story apartment building in Istanbul’s Kartal district collapsed on Feb. 6, killing 21 people.
Turkey’s Environment and Urbanization Minister Murat Kurum said early on Feb. 10 that 10 buildings around the collapsed building were analyzed and eight of them were given a demolition order.
