Hundreds of historical artifacts from Yoros Castle in Istanbul still missing
The whereabouts of a total of 661 historical artifacts stolen from a depot at the Yoros Castle in Istanbul three years ago are still unknown. Click through for the story in photos...
Burglars broke in the depot at the castle where the artifacts unearthed from excavations were being kept in February 2015. The incident took place on Feb. 2 of that year and the warden at the castle informed the authorities about the burglary the next day. Photo: gezmen / Alamy
At that time, the excavation crew notified the Culture Ministry that 233 artifacts from excavations in 2013 and another 428 objects from excavations in 2014 were missing.
The police had investigated the incident in 2015 but found nothing.
Those objects had been brought to light in the excavations carried out in 2013 and 2014. The burglary also halted the excavations that began back in 2010 under the joint coordination of the Culture Ministry and Istanbul University at the castle.

“Necessary announcements have been made abroad and in Turkey to find the missing artifacts, including oil lamp pieces, coins, and metal objects,” the ministry said in a statement.
