Heavy snowfall hits Turkey, Istanbul expects storm
Turkey has been hit by a fresh wave of wintery weather as heavy snowfall has disrupted daily life in many eastern and southern provinces while the metropolis Istanbul is expected to be hit by storm on Dec. 30.
According to the latest forecasts by the Turkish State Meteorological Service, the eastern and southeastern parts of the country will be mostly cloudy along with sleet and snow, while precipitation is expected all across Turkey.
Heavy snowfall has been continuing in the eastern provinces throughout the weekend, disrupting transportation.
Roads leading to some 139 villages in eastern Tunceli, 49 villages in Erzincan and three villages in Kars became inaccessible due to excessive snowfall.
The snow depth reached 10 centimeters in Ağrı, 8 centimeters in Kars and 6 in Erzurum.
In ski resorts such as Palandöken, Cıbıltepe and Ergan, the snow depth was measured at 28-34 centimeters.
In southeastern Adıyaman, 93 residential areas and 82 countryside districts have been entirely clogged by snow.
Some 36 villages have become inaccessible in the province.
Meanwhile, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality warned the metropolis’ residents of a heavy storm that is expected to continue from Dec. 30 into the early hours of Dec. 31.
The municipality also urged the residents to pay attention to possible incidents caused by cold weather, heavy storm and icing.
Ferry rides were also disrupted as some 10 lines were cancelled on Dec. 30.
