Floating islets used for weather forecast by Turkish villagers
Floating islets used for weather forecast by Turkish villagers
Three floating islets on a lake in the northern Turkish province of Rize are being used by villagers to predict the weather. Click through for the story in photos...
The islets, whose surface areas are between 10 and 40 square meters, float slowly on the surface of Adalı Göl (Island Lake) in the Rize province’s Çamlıhemşin district as they have no connection with the ground.
Black Sea villagers, who stay in the the green highlands in summers to graze their animals, say the movement direction of the islets give hints about the forthcoming weather conditions.
“When the islets move to the south, it means the weather will turn bad and fog will arrive soon. If they move to the north, it means the weather will be nice and sunny,” villager Hakkı Serin said.
“The forecast actualizes whenever an islet touches the shore after its floating movement. It always proves correct,” he added.
The unusual method of local forecast has passed from generation to generation.
The islets, formed by organic material mainly composed of plants’ roots and remains, float with the wind as the leaves on them function as a natural sail.
