The first ‘supermoon’ of 2018 was visible in Istanbul late on Jan. 1, giving locals an up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter view of the moon. ‘Supermoons’ occur when a full moon approximately coincides with the moon’s perigee, or with a point in its orbit that is closest to earth.
