The cocaine seized in Kocaeli was shipped from South America to be distributed in Turkey and Europe.
Gendarmerie forces in Kocaeli had obtained the information that a sizeable amount of cocaine would be smuggled into the country. A ship that units from security forces began to monitor on Aug. 7 after it entered Turkey’s territorial waters docked at a port in the Körfez district on Aug. 8.
Security forces raided the vessel at the port and checked the containers on the ship with x-ray machines.
Ferrosilicon, used to produce carbon steel and stainless steel, was found in sacks by a police dog, who detected the cocaine stashed in the sacks in sports bags. Each contained 1 kilogram of cocaine.
“This is a very significant amount. Customs Enforcements worked together with other security units in this operation. Gendarmerie forces are keeping the cocaine to destroy it. The process will be finalized following the completion of legal procedures,” said Kocaeli governor Hüseyin Aksoy.
He added that the cocaine was concealed inside a chemical material and squeezed in other cargo to prevent dogs from detecting the drug.
The governor also noted no one has been detained at this point in connection with the seized cocaine.
Reportedly, this was also the third largest amount seized in the world, according to the sources.
