Some 513 of 89,271 traffic accidents in Turkey in the first three months of 2016 resulted in death while 34,087 resulted in injuries, according to data from the Turkish police department.

The accidents, in which a total of 625 people lost their lives and 56,202 people were injured, were largely caused by “drivers’ inability to control vehicles’ speed due to road, weather and traffic conditions,” the data showed. Such accidents were followed by accidents that were caused by violations of the right of way at intersections or due to rear-enders.

In accidents including deaths and injuries, Turkey’s biggest city, Istanbul, topped the list with 3,271 such incidents. Ankara and İzmir followed with 2,397 and 2,269 such accidents, respectively.

With nine accidents wounding 15 people, the eastern province of Tunceli recorded the least number of traffic accidents.

The records also showed that tickets worth 773,724,414 Turkish Liras were given to 3,295,958 vehicles in January, February and March.

In the accidents, 35,633 drivers, 4,029 pedestrians, and 106 passengers were found guilty of road infractions.
