One soldier dead, another injured in incident in İzmir

İZMİR
A Turkish private shot dead a colleague and seriously wounded a third soldier in İzmir early on March 30 following a reported argument.

The soldier, who was identified by his initials A.K., shot H.E. and M.E. during roll call at the İzmir Çiğli 2nd Main Jet Base Command. H.E. died in hospital while M.E. was seriously wounded and hospitalized.

A.K. reportedly quarreled with the other two for an unknown reason before the incident took place early on March 30. A.K. seized a gun from a specialist sergeant’s belt during a roll call and shot the other two. A.K. was detained by soldiers at the scene.

Military service ranging between six months and a year is compulsory for all male Turkish citizens once they turn 18.
