One person was killed in a tramway crash in the Çemberlitaş neighborhood of Istanbul at noon on Dec. 27, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

The tramway reportedly crashed into a person who suddenly appeared in front of the tram. Witnesses called authorities, while ambulances arrived on the scene immediately.

The body of the person, who has not yet been identified, was removed from under the tramway after 45 minutes.

One of the witnesses said he heard the sound of a crash.

“While we were in our shop, we suddenly heard the sounds of a crash outside. We saw someone who had been cut under the tramway. There were drops of blood on the ground,” he said.

Another witness who was on the train said they thought it was a cat.

“The tramway put on the brakes while we were on it. We were in a panic. Before they said it was a cat; then we learned that it was a young person who was trying to cross,” he added.

Service on the line was stopped in both directions following the incident before resuming between Bağcılar and Beyazıt and Kabataş and Sultanahmet.
