"Sarkozy is outraged at what is going on in the government and also in his party, the Union for Popular Movement (UMP). It is a carnival. He will come back and save France," Enrico Macias, a French singer of Algerian origin, has said in an interview with the daily Le Parisien, published today.

"I am disappointed by the left. Actually, I don't believe the left exists today. I am more leftist than Ségolène Royal or François Hollande even though I've supported Nicholas Sarkozy," he said.

The 74-year-old singer also commented on the famous actor Gerard Depardieu's departure to Belgium to evade a crushing tax hike.

"Depardieu is right. He is courageous enough to go. But I would hesitate if I were in his place. The fact that I exist today is thanks to the French people."
