Naked imam beaten by mob over adultery

The 55-year-old imam had led the congregation in Akyazı three years ago.

A retired imam has been stripped and beaten by unidentified assailants in the western Turkish province of Sakarya, for committing adultery.

The 55-year-old imam, identified only by his initials A.G., had returned to Sakarya’s Akyazı district, where he led the congregation three years ago, for this year’s Eid al-Adha religious holiday. However, the father of five was found in front of a local cafe tied, naked and bloodied on Oct. 6.

Locals told Doğan News Agency that the imam, who was taken to the Sakarya Education and Research Hospital after the incident, fled Akyazı three years ago with a married woman with three children, scandalizing the community.

The local gendarmerie has opened a probe into the incident to find the assailants.
