Why did Israel lose Turkey?

Font Size: Larger|Smaller
BURAK BEKDIL

Ostensibly, the Israelis had a strong argument when they smiled and shrugged off all potential problems as they based their comfort on an assumption that was, in the end, too simple and unrealistic: “The Justice and Development Party, or AKP, may have been largely inspired – albeit to a disputed degree – by Islamism. But they are pragmatists. Everything will be fine with them. After all, they’re not terrorists, are they?”

Certainly, the AKP is not a terrorist organization. And the Israeli optimism was understandable. If you spend a month in Israel you will cherish every Islamist who does not bomb and shoot you. But there had to be limits. And that’s precisely where Israeli optimism has failed.

In the span of a few years, Turkey and Israel have moved from a working regional alliance, which many mistakenly tagged as “strategic,” to anything but an alliance. Even when the Israelis were being comforted by Turkish assurances, Turkey’s Middle East policy was changing track.

When Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said “One minute!” to President Shimon Peres at Davos and that the “Israelis just knew how to kill well,” the Israelis were briefly alarmed but then took comfort in the soothing words of Turkish diplomacy. Erdoğan was just trying to win a few more votes in the then-forthcoming local polls. Later, everything would come up roses. But it didn’t.

Suddenly the Israelis noticed that Turkey was not only a biased broker between Israel and Syria, but was also rapidly becoming Syria’s best friend. Before that was fully digested, Erdoğan defended Iran’s nuclear ambitions, pointing his finger at Israel once again. Finally, less than a week after Turkey informed Israel that it was unwelcome at the Anatolian Eagle military exercises, a shining delegation of 10 Turkish cabinet ministers and 29 parliamentarians rushed to the Syrian border to celebrate the lifting of visas, or, in the joint Turkish-Syrian wording, to celebrate their countries’ “common past, common future.”

Naturally, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem said the Turkish decision to expel the Israeli Air Force from the drill had been “extremely welcome.” Simultaneously, Syria announced that Ankara and Damascus had agreed to have joint military exercises that will be “more comprehensive and bigger than those held last spring.”

Now, the Israelis do not know whether they should be greatly upset, complain about the situation or try further in vain to salvage a relationship with the AKP that was never what the Israelis thought it was. The fresh issue is the trailer of a TV series shown on state television featuring blood-thirsty Israeli soldiers sadistically killing Arab children. A stamp then appears on the frozen scene of Israeli atrocities with the message: “One minute!”

Funny, the Foreign Ministry claimed the decision to oust Israel from the exercises was a “technical matter.” It reminded me of Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek’s explanation of the unprecedented tax fine against the Doğan Media Group: it was “purely technical,” he said. Oh, really? What is a technicality? Ideological differences? Anti-Semitism? I am sure Hitler, if asked at the time, would also have said sending the Jews to the gas chambers was a technical matter. Fortunately, however, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu “corrected” his own ministry when he talked about “our sensitivity on Gaza, East Jerusalem and the al-Aqsa mosque.” Erdoğan said as much himself when he said the Israeli Defense Forces had their invitation withdrawn “because my people wanted it so.”

Erdoğan may ask his people and decide next to give orders for joint exercises with Iran, especially in launching missiles at “those who know how to kill well.” But at least his behavior has an explanation. With or without elections in sight, politicians tend to play for domestic consumption. And there is probably nothing better than Israel bashing in Turkey. When would a politician not resort to that? When the cost of Israel bashing is perceived to be greater than the benefits of it. Right? Right.

Has Erdoğan had to endure any political cost since his Davos tirade? No. Any cost when he made his country’s Syria’s best friend, in the words of the Guardian? No. Can it be a coincidence that all this fresh rounds of Israel bashing come at a time when his advisors tell him Israel is no longer the old Israel and that the Jews have minimal leverage on the U.S. administration? What better set-up could Erdoğan imagine, when he realizes that in a rare moment he has the luxury of following “his heart?” It is a genuinely rare moment in which he really could follow his political genes and not have to listen to his pragmatic mind.

Millions of secular Turks did not needlessly fear that Erdoğan and his men would “go east” when they claimed to do the opposite. They did not needlessly fear that Erdoğan’s Islamism would emerge at some unknown future and begin to hurt his Western friends, including Israel. Today it’s Israel. Tomorrow, it will be Europe and America.

And the Israelis… When they finish celebrating themselves, they should cheer up once again and just tell each other, “What’s wrong with all that? After all, the AKP is not a terrorist organization. Let’s keep up the support!”

Let's not forget the fact that Israelis (yesterday's victims, today's victimizers) are never wrong. They are perfect and never make any mistakes.

Boy this is not the Turkey of our last sunny holidays in Bodrum etc. You have rather quickly in western eyes in the following ways: 1. Anti western, anti semetic 2 pro Syria (noted for killing 20,000 of its own people in one attack), Iran who needs no discription 3. Your chances of entering the EU in the next 50 years are now nil. 4. You endanger the Turks living in UK and Germany 5. You will begin to loose western tourism and they wont buy your property 6. You are frightening us with your Islamic sentiments and turning away from us who supported you in the difficult times. 7. We used to prefer you to the Greeks. You were kind and welcoming to all visitors. Now you are surly & aggressive. 8. Even our pro Turkish attitude to your northern part of Cyprus is waning since you do not want a re-united island. 9. and last of all Israel. How quickly you have turned on your regional & important friend. Of course the Arabs dont want peace, but you are not Arabs and it would be better for you not to get too involved knowing your past & recent history (Armenians & Kurds)"people who live in glass houses...." Let's hope there is a positive change or maybe your secular army intervens.

Guest - SenBen (2010-01-10 18:42:00) :

this antisemitic and hostile attitude from some commentators here against Mr Bekdil and his point of view shows what happens when u play the jew card for your domestic political advantage: the deep rooted anteisemitic islamists feel safe to say their racist opinions. Mr Bekdil, dont watch what this degenerated islamists write here about you. Journalists like you are the only hope for Turkey to become a modern society. This islamists and antisemitists must be fight back into the caves from where they come. It is a fact that turkey is slidering more and more into a dark age with this AKP, We need a lightower MR Bekdil to find the safe haven. Plz dont give up, i know it is mor a job to write articles like this, i hope that you dont lose the power and will continue your great work!

Israel does not own Turkey.Burak Bekdel must be has to be a Zionist. Turkey needs to deport all of its Zionist sympithizers to Israel. A better idea is for all countries to deport their Zionist citizens to Israel. In this way world peace will be attained.

Guest - Observer (2009-11-23 01:25:22) :

This article is clear written by a right-wing orthodox Israeli Lieberman or a person who works on behalf of Israel in turkey. We all know that all Turkish kemalist papers are owned by turkey Jews. Turkey should be a free country who choices it;s own policy not scared by Israel or anyone. And our policy should be working with countries in the world.

Guest - Suhail B. Hamza (2009-11-14 22:02:26) :

The Article Sows how frustrated the writer is. He is unable to digest the progress of the turkey. Currently the Turkey is not the Same old Sick man of Europe. Now its Courageous Turkey, It's not bullish. Its Brave enough to talk the Truth, Formulate regional Alliances and build the trust among friends. Its the Voice of its people. I Personally Hail this leadership, even though iam not a resident of Turkey, The Writer should see the things in new perspective.

Guest - Hassan (2009-11-12 14:07:13) :

Developing good neighborly relations is a good long-term strategy. Everything is to be gained by engaging your neighbors and in that respect Turkey is on the right track. It will create more commercial opportunities for Turkey and bring stability in the region. Turkey as a nation has matured where I don't think they will be importing any radicals just by engaging in trade. Turkey's economic growth, its confidence, freedom of press, all point to a better future. with love from Pakistan

Guest - Rahul (2009-11-10 14:13:56) :

The writer has put down his opinion on the matter and I dont blame him for voicing his opinion. If you ask 10 people you may get 10 different opinions. its a matter of individual perception and inclination. The point here is not about. I am an outsider and have seen other muslim countries as well. I will give you the facts here : Saudi Arabia, birth place of islam has nearly 80% muslims, Malaysia, another conservative islamic country, has nearabout 70% muslims. But Turkey has 98% muslims and still i see turkey much more independent, strong, culturally deep, open society and peaceful. so lets not argue on if israel has an influence on turkey or not. Mr Erdogan's steps for few might be correct and for others it might be wrong. but its a step not by the PM but wht he says or wht steps he is taking is wht the majority wants (who voted him to power). Lets be realistic on that. What the author here is saying is one of the opinions. and we can all argue about it and carry on with our biz as usual after a while. The result will and can only be reflected in teh society if we all can be rational being so that these arguments can be worked out towards the goal itself. Otherwise the dust will settle down once the parade is over.

Guest - SenBen (2009-11-09 19:33:41) :

BURAK BEKDIL . Thank you for this truefull article. Turkeys policy is suddenly moving faster and faster to an islamistic state. U found the right words. Erdogan is an antisemit and antiwestern character in my eyes , he feels kinda safe to show this more and more open. His policy is dangerous and the bill will come. Is Atatürks Turkey over ? Will at least win the religous islamistic part of Turkey... A nightmare for Atatürks children and secular Turks. PS: Turkish laws? Or AKP censorship?

Guest - Guest-JFKMCHS (2009-11-06 03:34:00) :

Im a High School student currently having a mock UN conference.Im also representing Turkey; its not just for that reason why Turkey lost alience with Israel it was the wrong time for Israel to attack. Israel took advantage of the two week break and decided to take Gaza. Turkey didn't like that so they bailed out and sided more with Palestine. Turkey has been very bi-polar were they stand.

Guest - Murad Selim (2009-11-05 05:53:10) :

Very good that Turkey is ending ties with fascist nation of Israel. No Moslem nation can be friends with a nation which murders women and children. AKP is leading Turkey back to greatness! Turks support the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people.

Turkey is gonna be a leadining nation in region with strategic place & the economy is very stabel doing biz with the nabours, is much better then look to west.Turkey had looked at the westslast 60 or so year but nothing happen,i am not a cheering for Mr Erdogan but he dose something to the Region & Turkish economy..he disevr for what he do, maybe EU dose NOT want to be her member, but the whole world will cheer for her strong fair justice Turkey..viva la Turkey.

This all proves how much Turkey and Turkish politics had progressed towards democracy. This article is an excellent example of freedom of speech. I was a member of a diplomatic mission in Ankara in late 50's early 60's. It was inconceivable even to think that such an article could have been published in Turkey then, without severe consequences. You are all looking at it from a very narrow point of view or your judgement is clouded with your own beliefs and interests. Additionally, because Turkey has advanced very quickly not only politically but also economically, some of its systems and institutions have not been able to keep pace with such a fast rate advancement. But, I've no doubt they'll catch up with, they do not have any choice.

Guest - Armani (2009-10-27 06:40:06) :

all of us are human and whatever judgment we do ..we need to do it humanely.. aren"t gazan also human.? they need respect and Israeli should pay the price for killing innocent people of gazan..where is justice..where is love... let the religion put aside for awhile..and please make judgment fairly without bias ...then u find justice, love and brotherhood of mankind

Most tragic country in the world is Palastine for last 60 years

Guest - Shelale S. (2009-10-24 14:21:44) :

All you people who are talking about Israel's violation of human rights and that "Turkey" is doing the right/a courageous thing by speaking up, I believe you're either ignorant or dishonest; the AKP is not speaking up for human rights. If the AKP was doing so, they would HARSHLY condemn the Iranian regime who is keeping its own people hostage. Do you know what a tragic country Iran is? Defending human rights is not what the AKP is doing.

Guest - kassimov (2009-10-22 12:41:59) :

Absolutely agree with the article. I doubt whether Erdoğan ever asked the Turkish people before making peace with Syria or worsening relationship with Israel. He can talk about his electorate (and even here I am not sure about its opinion), not about all the people of Turkey.

Guest - ottoman soldiers (2009-10-20 19:07:07) :

The writer need to check himself and be clear what he wants to say i sense he is against the turkish peoplesl will. Obama has invited the prime minister and see what come may of it. The israelis are the one who taking the wrong way not the muslim Turkey. Ataturk has nothing to do with the present he did his best fighting the infidels Britain and European occupation. However, I will submit the author not to make Turkish peoples weak by expressing their will and feelings with their brethrens and sisterns in Gaza. Turkish after all are muslims, as a turkish Army General once said ' we are not against islam, and turkish military are muslims'

Guest - David (2009-10-18 16:26:47) :

You simply don't get it, Jason. If the 432 children dead in Gaza is sensationalist propaganda, then you are on the wrong side of the fence of reality, left with no sense of rectitude. How Turkey view their relationship with Israel will be contingent on Israel's behavior. For too long all they've done for Turkey is shun and eschew her neighbors for their benefit. Turkey does not need Israel in order to flourish and remain a free able-bodied; to remain delusional in this fib is not only grievous but inimical to Turkey's interests and it's people's aspirations. You probably still think that EU is still a stop priority, it's not, and people have already begun to understand this pipe dream. If you and your fellow Kemalists disagree, prove it in elections. Winning only 15-20% of the vote won't cut it. If there is nothing more better and common in Turkey then to bash Israel, then something right is being done.

Guest - Mo (2009-10-17 05:37:41) :

I wonder Mr.BURAK BEKDIL has any common sense or just he is paid by Israel lobby. What a pathetic article I have ever read. First of all what AKP and Erdogan is doing is the will of majority of the Turkish people. Secondly Israel can't be a honest friend of a Muslim country. Until now they were using Turkey against Muslim by scaring Turkey by its neighbors. Now we have smart Government in Turkey their cunning will not work. Thirdly AKP Government is secular and respected by USA and European countries. They are becoming friends of all countries including Armenia, Syria and Iran. After all they are Turkey's neighbors. Why Israel is so important to some. Every country should be treated same. Now it's time for Israel to behave and get its act together otherwise no one will be left beside them soon.

Guest - mks5 (2009-10-16 23:55:50) :

If Turkey truly wants to become a major power in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, we must keep relations with Israel, which is the most powerful country in the region. I don't condone or make excuses for civilian casualties in Israeli action, but if we downgrade relations because of that, then we must also downgrade relations with Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and other countries where violating human rights isn't the exception to the rule--it IS the rule.

This article is spot on! All those of you who repeat the AKP mantra that distancing Turkey from Israel and moving closer to Syria and Iran is going to extend Turkey's power, can you please explain how it will do so? I think the AKP is making a big strategic mistake in distancing Turkey from Israel. Why does Turkey under Erdogan's leadership aspire to the impossible task of being the leader of the Arab world? What good does it bring to Turkey to be so close with Iran and Syria? Protesting over the treatment of Palestinians is fine, but will severing ties with Israel really force Israeli government to change its policy towards the Palestinian issue? Of course it won't! Neither Palestinians nor Turkey will gain with AKP's current policy towards Israel. Erdogan knows this only too well - he is a very shrewd political manipulator - and he is doing this only because he knows it is a vote winner. Never mind that it comes at the expense of Turkey's interests in the world!

Guest - me (2009-10-16 18:10:50) :

Did I read the same article as most of the commentors? I didn't get that BB was pro Israel in this piece. Ataturk would be rolling in his grave from all the actions of the AKP. By opening the borders with Syria, Turkey will only reap the infiltration of the terrorist criminal element onto Turkish soil. Syria has proven over the centuries that it is not to be trusted. The EU is the only answer for Turkey. The AKP will only lead the country dow a path of "religious" destruction. Be ware. BB rarely gets it wrong. Once again, strong writing. It might not be exactly what people want to hear, but that is what sets him apart from most writers in Turkey. Keep up the good work

Guest - Giora (2009-10-16 17:58:01) :

One thing can be said: Ataturk died too young. He should have lived only 10 more years in order to make Turkey a country more suitable for the west. Turkey is sinking... sad.

Guest - Israel (2009-10-16 17:26:26) :

Good bue Turkey! We are now on opposite sides, a pity Tell me who your friends are and I'll tell you who you are Shalom from Israel

Guest - jason (2009-10-16 17:24:04) :

David - this article is just an honest observation of the direction the government has apparently decided to take. You can say "massacring Palestinian children" all you want and either you do not care to check reality or you wish to influence events through false, sensational propaganda at the expense of Israel. The author understands Turkey is a strong and independent country. But it sounds like you want to up end the basis of a free, modern Turkey which I think most people in and outside of Turkey would not want to see.

Guest - deniz (2009-10-16 15:36:56) :

Please! What has the West done for Turkiye? Sarkozy and Merkel keeping us out of the EU for reasons none other than religious and cultural.Isolation of Northern Cyprus. Parliaments that pass Genocide declarations easier than they pass their own government budgets. The west has been a big joke and certainly no friend of Turkiye. Going into the EU would be a disaster as the EU will all be in adult diapers in the next decade or so. I am no fan of the AKP, but the West is certainly not the answer to our future! Look East young man, look East.

Guest - John Joyce (2009-10-16 15:25:35) :

At Davos I remember Erdogan as disagreeing in kind to Peres' all inclusive justification of the Cast Lead operation and then firmly walking off the stage . And now it seems to me that Israel is having second thoughts on its rupture with Turkey . Why is that , could it be economics, or Turkey's strategic location , or that they are losing a Muslim interlocutor ? Maybe it is that Turkey is now drawing closer to Israel's perceived enemies ?

Guest - Sami (2009-10-16 15:21:33) :

This is one of the best samples of How to increase the Antisemitizm in Turkey. Current Goverment AKP is moving towards the Iran and try to create Sheria rules in Ataturks Modern Turkey.

Guest - Ohad (2009-10-16 13:13:03) :

The ousting of Israel from the Anatolian Eagle exercise kind of backfired on Turkey. Instead of ousting Israel from the exercise, it ousted Turkey from the West as Italy, Greece, Britain and the US left right after it - prompting a nervous interview from Turkish Foreign Minster trying to save face by saying "we have decided to make this a national rather than international drill"... Couple this with Turkey's reprochmant with Syria, the slightly more moderate and luring wing of the Islamist world - and it's bye bye EU, and in the words of Star Wars' Darth Vader, "Welcome to the Dark Side". Ata Turk must be truning in his grave right now.

Guest - Sima (2009-10-16 11:58:09) :

I think the article speaks for itself. I also fear that Turkey is turning towards an extreme islamic country, when it is well known that the great Ataturk himself said that state and religion should be separate. It also seems that Turkey is getting further away from becoming part of the EU.Not good at all for the Turkish people.

Guest - hpg (2009-10-16 11:41:53) :

Dear readers, consider that Mr. Bekdil is both intelligent and well informed. His comment certainly has no special connections with Israel. The purpose is purely internal and tries to make the AKP a target for international opposition as the internal oppositionn in Turkey is below the most modest standards and leaves oppositionals like B.B. without hope. Hence, the content must not be overvalued and the situation be understood with a touch of compassion. hpg

Guest - David (2009-10-16 08:11:41) :

This article reads like an article I would read on a far right Israeli Newspaper, or possibly could be well written by the great Lieberman. So let me try to understand the cusp of what you the author attempts to relay to his writers. He basically says let Israel do what Israel wants to do and let Turkey do what Israel wants Turkey to Do. If the Palestinians kids are massacred, it's by all means okay, because after, in regard to how the Kemalists view this, they are expendable and needless. BURAK BEKDIL, it's time to stop trying to please your Israeli counterparts, grow some mettle and come out of the closet, it's save outside, even without Ataturk.
