US welcomes Turkey’s efforts over Iran issue

Amid ongoing pressure from top US officials to China, the United Arab Emirates, and other key countries in support of tighter sanctions against Iran, Washington welcomes Turkey’s efforts over Iran’s nuclear issue. ‘We appreciate the hard work that Turkey has put,’ a senior adviser with the US State Department says

The United States welcomes Turkey's efforts to bring Tehran "to a more reasonable position," according to a senior advisor with the U.S. State Department.

"We believe the government of Turkey shares our objective of preventing Iran from getting nuclear weapons. We appreciate the hard work that Turkey has put in in trying to persuade Iran to adopt a more reasonable position," Robert Einhorn, the U.S. State Department's special advisor for nonproliferation and arms control, told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Thursday.

Einhorn said Turkey and the U.S. sometimes differed on tactics, such as Turkey's joining with Brazil and Iran in the Tehran Declaration in May.

"They supported what we considered to be an unacceptable version of a proposal we supported back in October on refueling the Tehran research reactor. We didn't appreciate the timing of that because it was on the eve of voting on the U.N. Security Council resolution, and perhaps some of the participants had in mind to derail that vote on a Security Council resolution," Einhorn said.

"So sometimes we disagree with Turkey on tactics, but we believe their motivation is good,” he said. “They want to solve this Iran nuclear issue just as we do."

US to press China and UAE

Starting next week, top U.S. officials would fan out to China, the United Arab Emirates and other key countries in support of tighter sanctions against Iran, Einhorn said. "China is of concern to us in this regard.”

Einhorn said he and Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes Daniel Glaser would visit China at the end of August, as part of a push to "raise this [concern] at the highest levels."

"We need for them to enforce the Security Council resolutions conscientiously and we also need for them not to 'backfill' when responsible countries have distanced themselves from Iran," he said.

Glaser and Einhorn were first bound for Japan and South Korea next week as part of a push by Washington to get its partners in Asia, the Middle East and South America to tighten the vice on Iran over its suspicious nuclear program.

A top U.S. Treasury official in charge of sanctions, Stuart Levey, will head to the U.A.E., Lebanon, and Bahrain next month, while another official will travel to Brazil and Ecuador, the department reported.

Joseph Christoff, a top international affairs and trade official at the U.S. Government Accountability Office, the U.S. Congress's investigative arm, said China had been "aggressive" in investing in Iran's energy sector despite the sanctions.

He told the same hearing that the United States had to "turn [its] attention" to China because international and unilateral sanctions were "not changing their behavior."

"The Chinese will argue that they have important security needs [related to obtaining sufficient amounts of energy to satisfy their booming economy],” said Einhorn. “In our view they are overachieving in terms of their energy security needs."

"We think they have to rebalance their priorities," said Einhorn, who underlined that China "is going to be the focus of very high-level attention over the next weeks and months" on the issue of Iran.

China, meanwhile, said it opposed tough new sanctions imposed by the European Union on Iran over its contested nuclear programme, again calling for more talks to resolve the standoff. "China disapproves of the unilateral sanctions put in place by the EU against Iran," foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a statement.

"We hope the relevant parties will adhere to diplomatic means on the issue, and properly resolve the issue through talks and negotiation," she said.

Christoff also called for "a concerted focus on the United Arab Emirates," which has historically close ties to Iran and "is now the number one exporter of goods and services [to the Islamic Republic].”

The lawmakers were weighing the effectiveness of recent legislation aimed at sharply tightening the economic grip on Iran over what the West charges is a covert nuclear weapons program but which Tehran insists is a civilian power project.

The U.S. has hailed a new round of U.N. sanctions against Iran, as well as fresh sanctions adopted by the U.S. Congress, and punitive steps taken by the European Union, Australia and Canada.

@Yike Here's some facts which will help you to get an understanding why most "terrorism" exists in the first place.... Page 4 of the introduction in John Pilger's book "Freedom Next Time"; this should help you to understand why Americans get mentioned so often.

Armande. After your claims, show any reliable source proving that the US killed one million people in Iraq! When you start looking, you fill that that your claims are wrong. I do not understand why we hear this figure, but we never hear how many terrorist attacks and suicide bombers are killed and neither do people seem very upset about the terrorism related killings. Only the american killings seem to count and are extrememely exaggerated. Why not try to stick to facts?

@Ylke US did killed much more then a million people in iraq! There was no terror aussaults before the US invasion for oil and resources (except the terror from the US puppet saddam!) Warcrimes must be a part of the US-culture, I have no other explanation for such an aggressive and dangereous country since nazi-germany. They've erased the indians and have stolen their country (and they are even proud about it). Almost every civil war in south and middle america is a result of the aggressive and false US politic. Aprox. 6-7 millions killed in Vietnam, 2 millions in Cambodia, hundret thousands in Afganistan so far. US still supports and creates dictatorships worldwide. As Churchill said, USA does everything correct, unfortunately after doing everything wrong what can be done wrong.

What a joke, this fella is a special advisor for nonproliferation and arms control? He should demand that his government get rid of there weapons. Iran has declared that they are not developing weapons. America should lead the way by getting rid of theres. Uncle sam also needs to make up its mind, each department is sending out different messages when it comes to turkish help

The article states that US diplomats are fanning out, to China and all over the world, to convince others to bypass the UN resolution and enforce the unilateral decision of the US. Here's hoping that other countries remain firm in abiding by ONLY the UN sanctions and not the unilateral activity of the US.

DA. US did not kill million people in Iraq. The fact is that a vast majority of the people died from terror attacks, suiced bombs etc. So please stick to the facts at least.

Ma'sh'llah! This is a classic example of Diplomatic Double-speak. The US which is the sugar Daddy of Israel, simply cannot attack Iran (as George W. attacked Iraq.) As Reader DA above rightly summarises it, the US is FLAT BROKE. Most Americans excepting perhaps the Ultra-Right Christian Fanatics do not want a repeat of the Iraq-Afghanistan wars - and this includes most Business Leaders too. So, at last, after consulting their own leaders of opinion, the US recognises the compromise worked out by Their Excellencies the PM and FM of Turkey and have deided to call it as day ! LOL! Now watch Israeli papers fretting and fuming about this decision. It will be fun; believe me!

Hakan- The cost is between 1-3 trillion, yes. That is about 97-99 trillion less that the 1000000 billion quoted by DA. My point is just that the facts are bad enough as they are. But all too often, people tend to lie and exaggerate to make something or someone seem far more sinister than they really are. I believe it's dangerous to allow that kind of discussion to go unchecked. It allows people to indulge in their anger and hatred rather than see things for what they really are and approach them as such. This kind of attitude leads to outlandish claims that people actually believe about whomever it is that they don't like. It lets people see the "other" as purely wicked be they Arab, Turk, Israeli, Jew, American, etc. Claims should be realistic and discussion should be based on facts not trumped up mythologies.

Yo, DA; don't listen to those who shoot from the hip in the dark, hoping to hit something! Your arguments are RIGHT ON the money in that the whole world busy dumping it on Iran, while practically next door, Israel has NOT ONLY over 300 atomic bombs (originally through cheating and misleading President JF Kennedy's US Government), but ALSO tons of chemical and biological weapons of mass destruction. Israel can wipe out ANY Middle Eastern country at will, and more!! Who pays for all of this for Israel, which really is not only the 51st state, but it is the most privileged state among all the United States in America?! The answer is our 'tax money' in the USA in billions and billions of dollars, while the current US deficit is at $13.3 Trillion! The fellow who calls himself OBSERVER is full of IT, and HE KNOWS it! Israeli nuclear subs are currently 'parked' in the Persian Gulf waiting to strike Iran, as they leveled the Iraqi nuclear facilities in 1981, and the Syrian reactor in 2008...

@ DA - The trouble is that the "referee" has been "bought".... Never-the-less, these are the conditions of global politics we must play under, and we simply can't dig ourselves in and close up shop, just because there are plenty of cheats out there. Our game-plan has to be, (and is) based upon that knowledge and understanding... Anyway, despite the immense (Israeli) pressure, it is slowly becoming clear that the US are slowly backtracking, or at least trying to make some amends from recent negative rhetoric towards Turkey that is emanating from certain (pro Israeli) camps. These words by Robert Einhorn and recent comments by Gen. James Mattis (http://todayszaman.com/tz-web/news-217521-top-us-military-official-says-turkey-a-key-ally.html ) seems to confirm this. @ observer - The cost to US of Iraq war is estimated between 1 - 3 Trillion $, depending on who you want to listen to (go do the research yourself)...

Did the USA put a pressure on Turkey for tradeing with Iran as they pressured China and UAE?

DA: When people exaggerate facts and disseminate blatant propaganda, they undermine their own arguments and betray their own misguided hate-filled gullibility. Don't exagerate reality to demonize the U.S. or Israel. Stick to the facts. It is enough to make your point. There is no need to try to convince people of a worse reality than already exists except to spread hate and misinformation. In your post below, you claim that the U.S. has spent a quadrillion dollars (1000000 billion) on the war in Iraq and that Israel has the capability of hitting almost any part of the world with their atomic weapons. You clearly know nothing about the technical requirements for delivering a nuclear warhead. Unless Israel has strategically placed missiles with nuclear warheads throughout the globe (like Russia and USA) then they do not have the capability you claim. You can't just shoot a missile with a nuclear warhead from a single location and hit half way around the world. Get real.

US rather spend 1000000 billion and million of lives on invasions against countries which MAYBE possess nuclear weapons and against countries that's willing to get inspected..instead of doing something about countries that actually is proven to have them and isn't even denying it. Israel's nuclear weapons (Jericho-3) reach almost all of the world, just tiny bits of North America and Australia is out of reach - Europe,Asia,Africa etc is fully covered. The meaning of democracy is to stick with the rules of the game, even when the referee is not looking - and that's why not a single country in the world is truly democratic.
