US pushes for agreement with suppliers of Nabucco

Font Size: Larger|Smaller

The United States is encouraging Azerbaijan and Turkey to finalize energy price talks regarding the Nabucco pipeline, according to Mark Parris, the advisor to U.S. Special Envoy for Eurasian Energy Richard Morningstar.

The Nabucco pipeline company has not yet signed agreements with suppliers and experts say the project could fall behind rival South Stream. Experts also said the project is at risk of not being implemented.

Russia’s Gazprom signed a contract in October to buy 500 million cubic meters of Azeri gas as of January 2010. Not having agreed to Nabucco, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev gave Gazprom the green light to increase its volume.

Parris held talks with Turkish officials on Thursday to discuss energy cooperation and stressed the importance of the immediate establishment of the Nabucco pipeline agreement in order to transport Caspian gas to the European market.

Describing his talks as “productive,” Parris said Ambassador Morningstar would visit Turkey within the same framework shortly.

Parris underlined U.S. support for the Nabucco pipeline after his meeting with State Minister Egemen Bağış on Thursday.

When asked whether Nabucco has been affected because Azerbaijan and Turkey have not yet agreed on an energy price, Parris said: “As I saw in my talks in both capitals [Baku and Ankara], both sides are considered important but see their national interests [in mind].”

In a call to gain momentum, he said: “The talks should be held at an honored schedule.”

....Experts also said the project is at risk of not being implemented.... Of course it won't be. It was never going to be, it was always going to be a white elephant. No one in Europe is stupid enough to entrust hundreds of miles of oil/gas pipeline, critical for Europe’s energy needs, running through Turkey, to the likes of the present government there. It would be political (and probably social) suicide. Who is going to pay for that part of the pipeline and the installations that come with it on Turkish territory anyway? Not the Turks for sure. Roughly 40% of the total pipeline would be laid in Turkey, more than in any other transit country, why should they pay the lion’s share? They sat back and waited for the EU to step in and foot the bill, but they didn’t and won’t. The realization of this is beginning to dawn on the Turkish government already. That’s why they made a deal with Putin for the South Stream project. This way they now have a ‘yes but….’ argument and can slip out of Nabucco without losing face and they can always blame the EU. Nabucco would give Turkey unprecedented leverage on the EU and they would probably only use it for blackmail (i.e. waltz in to the EU without reforms, demand to build more mosques all over Europe, demand Islam be recognized as a major state religion in the EU, demand a bigger say in the running of the EU, block membership applications of other European countries while demanding preferred candidacy status for their ‘Turkic brothers’ in all the ‘stans all the way to China, get the EU embroiled in all sorts of political and even military conflicts all over the place, the list is long and tiresome). They would also blackmail their suppliers. And every time there was a problem they would just blame the other side. They would jump the price every chance they got. This would suit the strategic interests of the USA. Of course they support this project, they may even pay for it in the end. And of course they support Turkey’s quick accession to the EU, their strategy is simple, it’s one of divide and rule. They know with Turkey on board in the EU they would achieve that with no problem. The accession of Turkey to the EU would in no time completely immerse the Union in political havoc and internal strife. There would be no chance of a workable, politically strong economic union, it would most likely fall apart. The EU would no longer be of concern to the USA as it would not be a competitor, only a consumer. Nope, this project is going nowhere.
