After its anti-piracy mission on the coastline of Somalia for five months, Turkish frigate TCG Gediz, with 266 crew members on board, returned home on Thursday.
A ceremony was held at a naval base in Marmara Sea to welcome Turkish sailors, reported Anatolia news agency. Families and officials greeted Turkish sailors in Gölcük, Kocaeli.
The frigate was participating in an international mission under the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 to hunt Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden.
On its mission in open seas off of Somalia, TCG Gediz has launched five operations against Somali pirates and escorted 122 Turkish cargo ships safely during their navigation off the east coast of Africa.
Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, the commander of the Turkish war fleet Admiral Mücahit Şişlioğlu said that TCG Gediz had also escorted several foreign ships during its mission.
