Turkey urges France not to block EU bid

Turkey urges France not to block EU bid

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu urged France on Friday not to block Turkey's bid to join the European Union, saying his country holds the key to a new relationship with the Muslim world.

In Paris for meetings with senior officials, including his counterpart Bernard Kouchner, Davutoğlu said that the French government's opposition to Turkey's European ambitions was a grave mistake.

“We've had strong relations with France since the 16th century. No other nation in Europe can better understand Turkey's importance,” the minister told the daily Le Monde before his meeting with Kouchner.

“Today again, Turkey and France have influence in the same regions. True cooperation could create a new dynamic in the Mediterranean, in North Africa, in the Caucasus and in the Middle East,” he said.

“This would also help the European Union. That's why all the mistakes and misunderstandings that are sometimes expressed in France have no historical or political basis,” he argued.

Sarkozy’s opposition:

Turkey began EU membership negotiations in 2005, but has so far opened talks in only 11 of the 35 policy areas that candidates must complete, while France, Germany and other member states have sought to slow or halt the process.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has led opposition, arguing that Turkey, whose large population would be the first in the bloc to be mainly Muslim, should settle for a special partnership agreement.

“We want Turkey to be a bridge between East and West,” Sarkozy declared in June during an appearance with President Barack Obama at which he publicly disagreed with the U.S. leader's support for Turkish EU membership.

“I told President Obama that it's very important for Europe to have borders. For me, Europe is a force for stability in the world and I cannot allow that force for stabilization to be destroyed,” Sarkozy declared.

But Davutoğlu argued that Turkey had been promised that if it met the bloc's entrance requirements in terms of political and economic reform and guarantees on human and civil rights, it would be admitted.

“No-one can force us to accept an option like a special partnership,” the minister declared. "We're not looking for a favor or special treatment, just for agreements to be respected. “The European Union's key selling point is its respect for agreements. It's thanks to that principle that the EU has become a draw. If it loses that, it loses all its legitimacy,” he said.

Sarkozy's two top foreign policy officials - Kouchner and European Affairs Minister Pierre Lellouche - have in the past been sympathetic to Turkey's bid, but the French leader himself has been firm in his opposition.

Sorry, but we don't need another 9/11 in Europe. If you are economically as strong as you claim, please stay where you are. Europe is not ready for you.

Guest - Emma (2009-11-16 01:00:44) :

Turkey is not Europe and they will never be.They dont have the same culture and the same values as to speak. I think Turks only flatter themselves but they know they are not Europeans. Just because part of their land lies in Europe which is about 5% doesn't qualify them to be part of NATO. That being sad, I don't think Europe is ready to share boarders with Syria and Iran and invite them freely into Europe.Racism and nationalism is part of past in most European countries. I wish them all the best, but please stay away from us.

Guest - passion (2009-11-10 21:04:04) :

Let's be honest, the EU doesn't want Turkey and Turkey is too ME too be a EU member.

Instead of paying too much attention to transitory political posturing, Turkey needs to focus on the 35 chapters instead. Keep in mind that at the moment there is an enlargement fatigue for the Europeans and a global economic crisis to boot. Sometimes the way journalists present this issue conjures images of insecurity. To use an image, it reminds me of a student who refuses to enter university studies until full assurances exist that a graduation diploma will be issued. Most commentarors here are right. Regardless of outcome, Turkey will benefit from the accession process.

by joining Europe, Turkey is giving up its roots and identity. people in 18th century europe used to talk about the "exotic east" and "the magical orient"....the were referring to the ottoman empire. Turkey should not give up its history and identity just to be part of an organization that does not want them. I feel turkey has an identity problem, Turkey does not want to be seen as some backwards middle eastern country and so they gravitate towards europe. Except, Europeans do not consider turke european so that puts them in a tough siutuation. Turks just wont fit in with europe, if you are from istanbul or western turkey then yes you will fit in. but can somebody from diyarbakir say "im european"???? i dont think so....

Guest - Mark Rivers (2009-11-08 03:05:02) :

These are all legitimate concerns. I hope Turkiye's goverment officials, president, PM and others (who are responsible for Turkiye's foreign policies) read these comments. But I doubt it. I certainly do not support Hamas terrorists, illegitimate and unelected Iranian regime, Syrian tyrant and convicted war criminal Hassan al-Bashir. Guest - Uri D. (2009-11-07 11:40:25) : Why on earth the EU would like to have a country that support Hamas terrorists, support illegitimate and unelected Iranian regime, support Syrian tyrant and now support convicted in war crime butcher Hassan al-Bashir. No-one in the EU need nor accepts Turkey shameful support in war criminals.

@ anton supertamp - give me a break.. I stand by what I said.. people are waiting to gain something and hardly ever mention what they will give. Stop banging on the door to get in.. and start working hard to be worthy of being invited. I think the EU invited Turkey, once upon a time.. but were rejected.. now it is time Turkey works hard and proves it is worthy. "Cut the crap".. sounds like you are full of it..and it is getting deep.. Don't compare Turkey to Poland.. you are talking apples and oranges... or maybe sausage and sucuk..

Guest - anton supertamp (2009-11-07 15:45:58) :

@ 7 hills you gotta be kidding what will we give you? germany france spain italy those countries are taking all the burden but E.U have 27 member interesting. and "people are waiting to leave country" europeans said same thing before they accept poland what happened tell me did they invade you? as you describe "plumbers" did plumbers spread to europe more than other countrie's people did? do us a favor and cut the crap and one last thing we are getting what we want you just dont worry...

Guest - katie (2009-11-07 14:43:41) :

Get real, it's basic knowledge that oil & water do not mix ! Other nations don't want Turkey in the EU. Stop kidding yourselves it's only France, you will not fit in. Why would the EU want a country with a President who stomps out of meetings when someone refuses his request ? Not only did your President behave childishly , he then went on to 'get even' by trying to block the Rameussen appointment.

Guest - 7 Hills (2009-11-07 14:39:53) :

Vilgot - I hear ya.. loud and clear.. but all you are saying is " we will be", "we will get". What will you give? Typical take mentality. What will you give? Start thinking from that point of view and then maybe you can understand why so many are against. Many people here are against because they don't want to give.. and are happy with what they have.. however great or minimal it is. Pontiaki_Lyra - you are right... Changing the rules in the middle of the game to suit ones on needs is not so unusual here. Bruna - You could not be so wrong. Did you actually spend time here.. or just some for holidays to Istanbul and holiday villages? grandchildren of ottoman - Yep.. spoken like a child that does not get his way.. no one will give you anything.. be ready to show how you deserve something.. don't just wait to be handed anything. Prove you deserve. Uri D. - Careful.. you don't want to upset them... you know they don't need much pushing to exhibit uncivilized behavior.. Maybe they will throw eggs at you... or worse. Rufai Abayomi - "Mind you, i live and work here and i understand peoples pledge relating to standard of living, Education, Health, Cultural value." You are right. The people might have a pledge but the government does not seem to be on the same page as the people especially in the area of education. anton supertramp - "somes arrogance" ? Just read the comments from the ones that want and are not getting what they want.. turk - typical comment from the peanut gallery. Stick to the subject. Turkey and the EU. Just for the record; The last I have read about that issue, the one you brought up, no country is supporting Israel. Many people are waiting, like horses at the start gate, to leave the country if allowed to join the EU. I wonder why.

Guest - turk (2009-11-07 13:58:45) :

And why should the world support Israels illegal occupation of palastina ???

Guest - german (2009-11-07 13:55:46) :

Turkey won't get wealthier or be better at health care just by joining the EU. Just have a look at Bulgaria, Romania or Portugal and not to mention Greek you will see what I mean. Germany and France needs to exploit the other countries to maintain their status. ( Checks didn't want to retify the Lisbon treaty and the UK is against it ). Only by establishing a good relationship with their neigbors Turkey can improve it's economy which is crucial for all the stuff you listed. Please don't forget that Japan and Finnland where laeding the world's suicide's nations list. So guys work hard have a good relationship with the neighbors and spread Turky's GDP evenly across the Country and you don't need the EU for that. Believe me they will come to Turkey if Turkey keep's focusing on their foreign policy. And if you improve the economy they won't be any reason for any extremism either.

Guest - anton supertramp (2009-11-07 12:59:32) :

as some of you said we are not part of europe and they will never see us as one but europe need turkey badly and we need to get some values from them its just a realtionship we are not closer europe than we are to aisa but my understanding is that some certain counrties ın europe cant see the ımportance of turkey we are not an ordınary counrty some know but some's arrogance just block their vision turkey is in the right way ıf we had done what we are doıng now we wouldnt even speakıng getting accepted into european enuıon anyway what we sould do ıs resolve cyrups ıssue contıniue so called EU bıd and at same time improve our realtionship with iran syria and asain counreties in wich ı belive we will build some sort of unıon with regards from istanbul...

Guest - Rufai Abayomi (2009-11-07 12:58:21) :

I think we need to be more patient and well inform on this ıssue of Turkey road to EU membership, for this would happened in once lifes time no matter the blockage of some EU member country. It need to be painstaking by the EU and Turkey to avoid future blunder, and i think is a good criticism for Turkish government to be steadfast and be well focus in an area of challenges. This could be helpful as a good take of and not to be drag into the mud like the newly joined european union member. The country has got what it take but in term of multilateral agreement both must be heeded. But i think international politics and heaviness of comparatives advantage has been played here. Beside, religion and population could not be the the major factor disturbing the bids of course Gernamy population is as much as Turkey population with both christian and muslim of which christian take the highest population as in case of more muslim in Turkey than the christian , all lives with peaceful cohesion. Mind you, i live and work here and i understand peoples pledge relating to standard of living, Education, Health, Cultural value. So the says of Turkish government quit for the Middle east is not an issued for they knew what at stake and a Turkish life style is peculiar to the european life style and they always distinguish them self from Arabs. Lastly, it would be very dangerous and non profitable for government and its people to choose living like the middle east people of which some of them seek for asylum and took refuge here in Turkey.

Guest - Bruna (2009-11-06 22:56:48) :

I hope Turkey'll come in European Community; many times I went in Turkey on this year and I think there are no differences among us. You are muslim and we are christian, Ok, the religion is not important, the people is important. You have a modern way of live, school, health ecc. I hope I can say:welcome in Europe

Guest - Ivan (2009-11-06 20:37:02) :

All of Turkeys reforms will be for nothing as long as the Cyprus issue is still not solved. the Greek Cypriot president and the Greek president have already said, as long as turkish troops remains on Cyprus and as long as the ports remain closed to Greek cypriot ships, Turkey will not be allowed into the E.U.

Guest - Niko (2009-11-06 20:26:56) :

the fact is, turks are not europeans, neither culturally nor geographically. if we let turkey in the e.u. we might as well let israel and morocco in the e.u....europe must have borders. I have nothing against turks. but why do turks want to be something that they are not?? lets be realistic, the majority of europeans will never see turks and turkey as "the west".

Guest - Pontiaki_Lyra (2009-11-06 20:22:42) :

Turkey reminds me of a child that does not get what it wants from his parents. always yelling "you promised me, you promised me".....guess what, things change.

Guest - Charles (2009-11-06 20:20:52) :

France is betraying Turkey by breaking its promises it made. How can anybody trust such a country or the European Union that allows this?

Guest - Kaya (2009-11-06 17:38:30) :

The day we can feel European and be declared European by other Europeans, rather than feeling Europeans and being told you are not one by the opposition, is the day the true reason for Turkeys establishment comes into full force; the day we join the West.

Guest - Jean (2009-11-06 16:19:12) :

I belong to the group of French citizens who are strongly in favour of Turkey's accession to the EU. We need you just as much as you need us. From what I've seen in Turkey and what I know about the country, I feel I have just as much in common with any Turk that with a Greek, a Pole or even a Brit ;-)

Guest - Vilgot (2009-11-06 16:13:50) :

Dimitri: Why on earth should Turkey not want to joint the EU. Just a few examples of the improvements: we will be wealthier, we will get better health care, we will get better care for our elder, we will get environmental policies, we will get better education systems, we will improve human rights, we will reduce corruption and nepotism, infrastructure will be improved, well, freed of press, I could go on for ever, but just look at the life style in EU and look at for example happiness rankings. You will see that it is the EU we should try to join and to learn from. We still have a long way to go, but it is the only way we can walk. Lately we have seen discussions about getting closer to the middle east, but just look at how every day people live in e.g. Syria, Iran. They are according to rankings the most unhappy and supressed people in the world. Why should we try to immitate that?

Guest - dimitri (2009-11-06 15:52:39) :

What does the everyday Turk on the street want?is there a clear YES we want to join for the majority?
