Turkish activists want minister tried for calling homosexuality a 'disease'

A Turkish gay rights group on Tuesday asked a prosecutor to put on trial a Cabinet minister who said that homosexuality was a disease that should be treated.

The complaint by the LAMBDA association, a copy of which was obtained by AFP, accused Family Affairs Minister Aliye Selma Kavaf of insult, incitement to crime and incitement to enmity and hate — crimes that are punishable by up to two, five and three years in jail respectively.

Kavaf "should apologize to lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transvestites and transsexuals in this country for her discriminatory statements that turn homosexuals into a target," Rüzgar Gökçe, LAMBDA member, told reporters outside the Istanbul courthouse where the association filed the petition.

Some 60 activists denounced Kavaf and called for her resignation in a demonstration about 200 meters (yards) away from the courthouse, chanting, "We are homosexuals, homophobia is a disease," and "Love, Freedom, No Room for Hate."

Fırat Söyle, a lawyer for LAMBDA, said the complaint was only symbolic since the minister enjoys parliamentary immunity and will not face prosecution.

Kavaf, who is also women's minister, said in a newspaper interview last weekend that she believed homosexuality was a "biological disorder, a disease."

"I think it should be treated," she told the mass-circulation Hurriyet daily.

Her remarks caused an outcry among the homosexual community, were generally criticized by the media and disowned by several figures from the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP including Health Minister Recep Akdağ.

Same-sex relationships have never been criminalized in EU-hopeful Turkey as in other Muslim countries, but there are no laws protecting homosexual rights and prejudice against gays and lesbians remains strong in daily life.

Police are notoriously harsh against transsexual prostitutes. Several of them have been killed in "hate murders" in recent years.

@ J....What I was trying to say is that sex was created to be shared by a man and a woman for the purpose of procreation within the bounds of marriage. This is the eternal truth and no one can change that. You say you feel sorry for me, but I feel sorry for you because you are advocating a lifestyle that leads to loneliness, unhappiness, and guilt. I base my belief on the word of God and I'm not ashamed of it. Prayer and abstinence are recommended for those who need help.

Hey Ted, since you have such strong opinions on 'society destroyed by homosexuality', why dont you give us an example of a society being destroyed by homosexuality in the last 300 years?

@ asker - do you think it is promoted? Where? I see no billboards dotted around Ankara, Istanbul or London, I see no TV adverts. There is no promotion, it is just as laws are becoming more equal, homosexuals are becoming more visible. Equal rights and not special treatment, that is all homosexuals are asking for, to be treated the same as you and I. Can you explain why homosexuality is being made 'interesting' to society? It is not a choice, it is how nature makes humans. When two people who love one another and decide to form a relationship and settle down even if they are of the same sex, why is that destructive to society? Society needs a bit more of this rather than the selfish, me me me mentality that we have these days. Why not adopt children too, if you have a loving stable home, that is a great environment for a child to flourish?

@Ted - I feel sorry for you, it looks like your education and indoctrination has made you unable to think outside of a very small box which you live in. Can we assume that the only time you ever engage in sex with another individual, male or female, is for procreation purposes only? By making the statement you have on this site, that is how it would be interpretted. The ball is back in your court....

Homosexuality as always been part of history! It is there, but there should be some kind of regulation not to make it interesting to a society...today's world somehow promotes the homosexuality, and this is something what is not right and destructive for a society...homosexuals need rights as all other people too (usually the have) but not become promoted by media, schools and people. Also homosexuals and marrige and to allow them adoption of children will be detructive for a society.

Homosexuality has the potential to destroy a society. Homo- sexuality is a disease because man was created for a woman and vice versa. The purpose of sex is procreation and not self gratification. Homosexuals will not enter heaven.
