The path ahead for Turkey and Armenia is steep and riddled with tripwires. Signing the protocols on Saturday was a great leap forward for the two states that have been at odds with each other for nearly a century, but there is still much ground to be covered. The Daily News provides some of the most sensitive issues the two neighbors will cross along the way

Although the protocols were signed late Saturday to normalize relations between Turkey and Armenia, the completion of the process still requires a lot of concentration and caution.
Here are some major challenges ahead on Turkey and Armenia’s path to reconciliation:
Growing reaction from the Armenian diaspora: Despite Armenian President Serge Sarkisian’s efforts to alleviate the concerns of the diaspora, it seems the head of state is far from satisfying his kinsmen abroad. The growing reaction from the diaspora could make life very difficult for the Armenian government in the ratification process. Additionally, the diaspora could also heat up the opposition in Armenia. Despite a parliamentary majority, the government would face difficulty in the ratification of the protocols.
Azerbaijan’s reaction: Azerbaijan and Turkey describe themselves as “one nation-two states.” Thus, signing the protocols with Armenia has sparked harsh reactions from Baku, whose relations with Turkey are not limited to culture and history. The two countries are in deep cooperation in the field of energy, which includes the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline. Despite assurances from Turkey that no further step will be taken if Armenia does not withdraw from occupied Azerbaijani lands, Baku could still use its “energy card” to secure Turkey’s position. It should also be noted that there is an important Azerbaijani lobby group in this country that could put pressure on the government.
Opposition in Turkey: The ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, has a clear majority in Parliament. Furthermore, the Democratic Society Party, or DTP, with its 20 members could also back the protocols. Finding 276 deputies would not be big problem for the AKP. But a Turkish official said: “This advantage could easily turn into a disadvantage. Believing that the vote is secured already could result in ignoring some nationalist dissidents in the ruling party. Different from Armenia’s parliament, votes from our deputies will not be instructed.”
Sarkisian’s absence at the match: Turkish officials say the process will not be affected if the Armenian president does not travel to Turkey to watch the match between the Turkish and Armenian national teams, but his refusal to come to Turkey would mean the first crack in the reconciliation process. That could also raise questions about Armenia’s will to complete the process.
If he comes: President Gül met with officials from Bursa to prevent reactions against Armenian football players and, if he comes, against Sarkisian. But following the signing of the protocols, some nationalist groups have already started a campaign to show a concerted reaction to a visiting Armenian delegation.
Another Annan Plan: This picture shows that the protocols could be annulled if one of the parties fails to endorse them in their parliament. This party seems to be Armenia. If the Turkish Parliament says “yes” and Armenia “no,” it would be similar to 2004 when Turkish Cypriots accepted the Annan Plan, a blueprint to reunify the island, while Greek Cypriots said “no.” The affects of the Turkish part’s endorsement to reconcile with their southern neighbor were limited because neither Turkey nor Turkish Cypriots could capitalize on it. In contrast with the idea that this situation will benefit Turkey, many say it will be seen as another victory for the diaspora, which could then increase its efforts for worldwide recognition of the 1915 events as genocide.

These were the words articulated at the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA) by Selahattin Demirtas, the deputy chairman of the parliamentary group of Democratic Society Party (DTP)—the voice of Kurds in the Turkish Parliament. Demirtas had taken the floor at the parliamentary session on Oct. 21 to speak about the protocols signed between Armenia and Turkey. ((((((((((No national security considerations can be an excuse for the annihilation of a population by means of forced displacement and massacres,” he said. “Governments, in an effort to clear themselves of the guilt, resorted to denial and to distortion of historical facts to conceal the truth. They rewrote the history. In school books, Armenians are portrayed as hostile figures, exaggerating the incidents of violence by Armenian activists and never telling the truth about the massacred Armenians.)))))))))

A dialogue between Turkey and Armenia certainly paves the way for Turkish citizens to get exposed to their real history of last century, and to come to terms with the Genocide that the Ottoman government committed against Armenian citizens 1915-1921. Turkey has evaded punishment for the crimes against humanity for almost a century. Turkey and Turkish citizens should know that nothing can change their history, but recognizing their mistakes can only bring peace and prosperity to the region, and improve Turkey’s image in the world.

Let's forget about the history and begin the process from the start. The turkish insisted on this historians commision, which is a return to the history.

It is unfortunately obvious enough that this protocol was not signed within an independent, mutual and peaceful atmosphere. Even presence of Clinton in Zurich during the signing demonstarates that the Us is ready there for anything. Moreover, the two parties weren't probably going to sign the agreement, then Clinton mediated and "persuaded" the parties to sign the agreement. It is clear that, the protocol was signed by force. Some country "forces" two to sign a bilateral prtocol and all of the ,nternational organizations just ignore or stay out of this "undemocratic" situation.

@Karma Why should Turkey try at all? Can somebody tell me what Turkey stands to gain from opening borders with Armenia? And what about the 1 million Azeris who Armenia has driven out of their homes in order to take their land? What about Turkey's loyalty to our turkic brothers and sisters Azerbaijan? Oh yes that's right, the more than 1 million displaced Azeris don't matter so much because they don't garner so much media exposure like the poor Palestinians in Gaza.

I agree, many Armenians consider hate as a part of their culture that would always be a problem, it’s also a fact they will try to fu.. all the Turks over, when the Borders are opened. However, what we are talking about here is normalizing relationships with Armenia “As a Neighbor”, so if they are not interested..No problem Turkey can simply try again after 100 year.

Well did you remember, how the Armenian Student killed me in Berlin? What was that Killing or vendeta? Be careful from those Armenians they will try to fuck all the Turks over, when the Borders are opened.

Other nations has solved bigger problems only because they believe in future, It seems everyone in the planet would achieve peace except we "The Clever Ones".

Orhan, if you are feeling so guilty why don't you first give your income to Armenia? Leave the half of Anatolia alone, who gave you the right to give away any Turkish land to anyone? I sincerely hope and pray that this protocol won't be ratified in the Grand National Assembly, but knowing the AKP traitors that have a majority in the parliament I know that it will be passed. Turkey doesn't need open borders or even diplomatic relations with Armenia. It's Armenia that needs relations with Turkey not the other way around!

IMAGINE the attorney of defendant says to judge pointing to victims relative: "who is this stupid men they are still talking about same thing" Future? which kind of future is expecting Armenians who are surronded by neighbors like Turkey and Azerbaijan. In turkey 1,500,000 Armenians were raped, killed, tortured villages and cities were burned down and the rest were exiled to die in deserts. 800,000 Assyrians 100,000+ Greeks and others had the same destiny as Armenians. Azerbeijan only in one day killed 30,000 peaceful residents of Shushi. Believe me I am not seeking revenge what is done it is done. but please do not act that way, saying "who is this stupid ...." because in the eye of beholder you will sound stupid for denying a nation a small " SORY" assuring a nation that the history will not repeat again.

To george mahroukian; i am glad u feel adanali. you can actualy migrate there. if u were to choose to become a citizen of this great nation, im very sure it wouldnt be dificult at all. no one would careless if u said u r armenian as long as u dont disrespect us turks by calling us genocidal barbarians and trying to tell everyone a one sided exaggerated story. Leave history to be verified by historians not politicians, thats all we ask. can u find any turks or azeri's living since birth in armenia? could we get armenian citizenship? I think not. either look forward and let the past go or let ur country men in armenia die of povety. the choice belongs to the armenians not the diaspora

Mr,Ozgur why dont you give half of anatolia to the rightfull owners(armenians),and give USD500 billion blood money to Armenians,if you cant, then shut up
Guest - ERMENI (2009-10-12 07:48:43) :
Hahaha Ozgur, you talk about Stupid man and you can’t even type correctly. The point is you as a Turkish Citizen should feel happy and lucky that the Armenian Government signed the protocol papers. The one thing Armenians and Turks have in common is that they both have extreme levels of National Pride and that has been set aside in this situation regarding the Protocols. A large number of Armenians living in Armenia and in other countries around the world are against the signings. Yet the Government of Armenia decided it was the right move to make.
