Sweden regrets parliament vote on Armenian 'genocide'

Font Size: Larger|Smaller

Sweden's foreign minister deplored Saturday a vote by his country's parliament branding the events of 1915 as genocide as counterproductive.

"It's regrettable because the politisation of history serves no useful purpose," Carl Bildt told journalists on the fringes of a meeting of European foreign ministers in Finland.

"We're interested in the business of reconciliation and decisions like that tend to raise tensions rather than lower tensions," he said.

"And I'm afraid of the effect it might have on the normalisation between Armenia and Turkey, we Europeans and Americans have been investing a lot of energy into what is very fragile."

Going against the government's advice, the Swedish parliament voted by a narrow margin to recognize the "genocide of Armenians" during the breakup of the Ottoman Empire, further infuriating Ankara by mentioning also other Christian communities as victims of "genocide" in Ottoman hands.

Ankara quickly recalled its ambassador and cancelled a visit by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to Sweden.

The Swedish vote came just days after a similar vote by a US Congressional panel.

"We have to move on," Bildt said.

The Swedish minister late Friday met Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoğlu in a bid to soothe ruffled feathers.

"The position of the Swedish parliament was shocking for us because parliaments should not decide for history, this is unacceptable," the Turkish minister said.

Armenians say up to 1.5 million of their kin were killed in a systematic campaign of extermination during World War I as the Ottoman Empire fell apart.

Turkey categorically rejects the genocide label, arguing that between 300,000 and 500,000 Armenians and at least as many Turks were killed in civil strife when Armenians rose up for independence and sided with invading Russian forces.

But much to Ankara's ire, parliaments in several countries have recognized the killings as genocide.

This is the FOREIGN MINISTER...not SWEDEN. A majority of their parliament recognizes the Genocide and is pressing Turkey to deal with its past.

Dan ... some say Turkey is NOT democratic, I say your posting is proof that there is freedom of speech, MUCH MORE THAN CERTAIN EU members !!! if you can prove that such things happened by respected people from that era, I am sure everyone will respect and accept the decision. the fact is the Armenians took up arms against their masters. They slaughtered and joined forces with the Russians, Turkey had no choice but to relocate them + yes wee even killed a few along the way by disease and hunger etc ... another FACT ... WHY DOESN'T ARMENIANS WANT TO SETTLE THIS BY OPENING THEIR HISTORICAL BOOKS ? WHY DOES ARMENIA STILL LAY CLAIM TO TURKEY ? this in anyone's language is an act of war ... certainly by US standards. IF YOU WANT PEACE then ACT LIKE IT not HEARSAY

One US Historian said 2 years ago that Russia started this whole mess. In about 1875 they sold guns for 5 pounds to Armenian Bandits living outside Turkey to attack Turkish people so the Armenian Bandits secretly came over the boarder and attacked thousands of Turkish innocent people in Eastern Turkey and forced Local Armenians living in Turkey to join the killing and they had to buy the guns for 10 pounds each and if they did not they will be killed. The Armenian Bandits wanted also to profit from the guns from their own race. So this means Armenians in Turkey were programed to fight to get Eastern Turkey for themselves during 1915 but I have not heard of the Armenians complain during the 70's, 80's & early 90's and why now! isin't out of time and out of date. And another thing what about after 1975 to 1985 where Sweden and Denmark did nothing to protect young Teenage girls who were forced and hit by deviants in the pornographic industry, the Swedish, Danish, German, Serbian and other European Governments turned a blind eye to this Human Rights Abuse.

Turkey should never admit something it had never commited. Let them bark on the moving caravan. The best is not to be insulted but ignore all moronic accusations with contemptious silence.

Al Christian nations did preform a genocide. "The Netherlands, Germany, America, France, Spain, Armenia, Russia, Britain, and Australia." It is very funny the Armenians creating a lie and the Christian Union is the first who Recognized it. The Armenian issue will not get solved under the EU send it to Asia they do well. "Genocide scholars are bribed as well"

Keep hoping Dan. Unfortunately it will never happen. Turkey is incapable of recognizing the Armenian genocide. Winners write the history or so they think.

"Sweden regrets parliament vote"...Again the Turks do not understand democracy! Sweden is the Parliament and the Parliament is Sweden !Why is that so difficult to understand! Mr Carl Bildt, now the foreign minister is on his way out next summer and Turkey will have to face the Swedish democaracy including a NO to Turkey in the EU.

Dan,it's such a double standard..these "genocide" claims came up when Turkey started trying to become a EU member there was NOTHING about it before, and the fact that you compare it to the Holocaust is a HUGE sign that you know nothing about the subject. Instead of wasting time on such a messy and 'no evidence' case you should start thinking of what is still going on,who's gonna put up claims against the genocides caused by the United States?,YES THERE'S LOADS OF GENOCIDES BY THE USA. And the reason why these "Armenian genocide" votes is going through is because of AKP.

Dan, It's not your regular German population who commited genocide, it's the Nazi Germany, Hitler and that was a genocide to against all Jews, christians and who ever they wanted to get rid off. Turks has not committed genocide against Armenians or anyother humanity, it was war unfortunately there were lots of casualties and it's still going on in this decade. Let us all stop feeding the fire with all the wrong innuendos.

So far at least 20 countries have accepted the events of 1915 as an act of genocide. And most likely the number will continue going upward; parallel to the cost of switching ambassadors back and forth. Lately, Turkey's position is that ; the issue should be decided by the historians. But which Turkish university with a Middle East History Department, concentrated on Armenia, have bred enough historians to research the case. And high school text are full of distorted information. And not only Turkish lay man but even scholars have no access to the historical facts. May be that is the reason Turkey have chosen the "denial" one among the three option of a guilty; admit, defend and deny.

I completly agree with Dan. When Turkish people will allow themselves to accept their (past) historical and political mistakes (alike Germany, Japan, Italy etc.), they just will gain respects from other nations, and will show some maturity and most of all HONESTY

It is very important to point out that what was made in the Swedish parliament was set up by the left wing opposition in the parliament. The right center government is against such politisation. Sweden is still one of Turkeys strongest friends in Europe and FOR Turkey in the EU. The government is in the same situation as the US goverment and can t hinder individual members of the parliament nor citizens to make their voices heard.

It its about time Turkey comes to terms with its murderous past... Look at Germany, would it get any respect in the world if it denied the Holocaust? Turkey should follow that example accept the Armenian Genocide as a terrible legacy from its past and state making reparations for the survivors.. but most importantly start teaching the Turkish children that part of history so as to ensure tat nothing like tat might happen again!!
