Peace cannot be established in the Middle East when the suffering of the Palestinians continues and the Gaza Strip remains a wreck, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Monday.

Speaking at the Istanbul Forum organized by Stratim, Seta and the German Marshall Fund, Erdoğan said the Palestinian question is at the center of all problems in the Middle East. The prime minister recalled that Turkey vocalized its disapproval of the previous year's bombing of the Gaza Strip, adding: “We criticized steps that were serving no purpose, but which increased suffering and sabotaged the peace process. We will continue to criticize it today, too. We will criticize anything similar taking place in other areas.”

Recalling that nine months had passed since Israel’s deadly offensive on Gaza, Erdoğan said the tragedy continues because reconstruction materials have not been permitted into the devastated region so that rebuilding can begin. “We cannot ignore this tragedy. The blockade against Gaza should be lifted as soon as possible,” he said.

Erdoğan said the international community should uphold its commitments, which will benefit not only Palestinians, but also Israelis. “I do not say this just because I am Muslim. I say this because I am human and because of my humanitarian approach,” he said. His statement received brief applause from Turkish members of the audience, which also included Jewish officials and academics.

Iran nuclear program:

Without mentioning its name, Erdoğan also targeted Israel who is known to have nuclear weapons while commenting on Iran's nuclear program. “Iran's nuclear program should not be the only one under focus, other countries possessing nuclear weapons should be questioned as well,” Erdoğan said. “We are doing our utmost to improve our relations with Iran. I firmly believe that the international community's concern over Iran's nuclear program should be eased.”

Turkey is determined to do whatever it could on the Iranian issue, said Erdoğan. “Yet, Iran's right for nuclear power with peaceful purposes should not be questioned either. We have a clear position on nuclear armament. We want a region free of nuclear arms. We do not want nuclear arms in our region. We don't want weapons of mass destruction in our region.”

Meanwhile, Erdoğan also said all financial resources allocated to defense and armaments should be allocated to fight against poverty. “Not only Iran but those countries with nuclear arms or the ones who are aspiring to have nuclear arms should also be questioned,” Erdoğan said.

Erdoğan 2 years ago said he would oppose a Kurdish state even if were in Argentina. So this guy is a hypocrit.

I wonder what AKP really wants to achieve with this new conflict oriented approach towards Israel. It is a conflict we do not have more to do with than any of the European countries, so why are we burning an important alliance like this? Is it to get support and good will among the arabic countries?

No bob, Israel doesn't have to cooperate with Turkey in order to have peace in the Middle East, it needs to cooperate with the Arab countries surrounding it. To be realistic, Turkey doesn't have much say in what happens between Israel and Arabs anyway. The AKP government didn't really have to alienate Israel to neutralize Syria for the Kurdish Initiative. I'm afraid that Turkey will feel the consequences of this in the Caucasus and central Asia, which is where it most matters for Turkey. I agree that we shouldn't be afraid to tell Israel the truth about what we think of their continuing policy towards Palestinians but we shouldn't be cutting ties with Israel either!

yeap turkey in the recent times has been criticized by İsrailes counterparts.but he truth must been told anywhere.why should we be afraid to say the TRUTH in acordance with democratic means.the reality is obvious İsrael is a great power but Do NOt undervaluate TURKEY potential in the region. As a result İsrael has to cooperate with Turkey if it likes to have peace in middle east.GAZZA must be solved and Palestinian state must be found in order to to give an end to the war in that region. But if we think from the bussinnesss point of view WARS BİNG MORE MONEY to the richest.for those it doesnt fit great powers interest to give an end to war

This Prime Minister is growing smarter and smarter with each day! Now who would have guessed it that it takes for Palestinian suffering to end in order to have peace between Israel and the Arab world??? I'm sure that the Israeli government is already running scared in the halls of their government institutions thinking of ways to make this message of Mr. Erdogan's really happen. Of course, we all know that Israel hasn't hearrd this message before and now our glorious PM has opened their blind eyes to what it takes to finally solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict! I just hope that in case his messages happen to lend on deaf ears in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv Mr. Erdogan has a plan to help end Palestinian suffering with some practical actions of his government. After all I hope it isn't true that our dear PM is just skillfully exploiting the Palestinian suffering to give his party a boost in the polls before the election that he wants to hold next year!

WHILE ERDOGAN'S "OFFICIAL" STATEMENTS ARE ONES OF MODERATION AND CONSCIENCE, HIS UNOFFICIAL STATEMENTS ARE ONE OF HOSTILITY AND ARROGANCE AGAINST ISRAEL. THUS ONE UNDERMINES THE OTHER. MORE EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON HIS UNOFFICIAL STATEMENTS AS INDICATING HIS UNDERLYING SENTIMENTS AND THIS, THEN, IS SELF DEFEATING.
