Slaughtering for God - and for thy global neighbors

Slaughtering for God - and for thy global neighbors

Millions of sheep and cattle will be slaughtered in Turkey during this long weekend. And the last words they will hear will be an age-old credo: “There is no deity but God… And to God goes all praise.”

These are the days of the “Feast of the Sacrifice,” one of the two apexes of the Muslim calendar. (The other one, which was about two months ago, marks the ending of the Ramadan fast.) During the four-day feast, which is also a national holiday, every well-off Muslim adult is obliged to sacrifice a sizeable animal. This is, first and foremost, a form of worship. “It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches God,” the Koran reminds. “It is your piety that reaches Him.” But there is also a social side of the practice, for the meat does reach neighbors, relatives and especially the poor.

From paganism to monotheism

The story goes back to the beginnings of Islam. Most pre-Islamic Arabs were pagans, and, like many other ancient peoples, they honored their idols by sacrificing animals. The Kaabah, which was then a pagan pantheon, was the center for these bloody rituals. The Koran, which banned all sorts of idolatry, told Muslims to sacrifice the animals only for their creator, the one and only God. It also told them the story of Abraham and his son, and how the latter was saved from being sacrificed at the last moment, thanks to being miraculously replaced by a sheep.

Since then, Muslims all around the world have been commemorating Abraham’s dramatic story during the time of the Hajj, the pilgrimage to the Kaabah, which is this weekend this year, but moves back 11 days every year because of the difference between the lunar and Gregorian calendars. The pilgrims at the Kaabah offer their sacrifices there, though others do it in their hometowns – in Cairo, Jakarta, Istanbul, or wherever.

The urban debate

Animal slaughter, to be sure, is no pretty business. Hence, to avoid giving the poor animals too much pain, Islamic scholars developed specific rules: The animals should be treated kindly up to the final moment. They should not see what happens to the ones before them. And the butcher should be as swift and smooth as possible.

Modern times, however, are apparently bringing even better solutions: An article on the Web site of Turkey’s official Directorate of Religious Affairs, the “Diyanet,” says that there is no religious obstacle “to anesthetizing the animal to save it from pain,” in contrast to some of the more conservative voices who disapproved of anesthetization.

The question is not only how the job should be done though. It is also a question of where. In the old days, the animals were slaughtered by the man of the house or the local butcher, and the location was simply a backyard or an open field in the town or village. However, the more Turkey became urbanized, the more this practice became difficult – and disturbing.

Scenes of people butchering sheep or cows near the highways of Istanbul became increasingly controversial, and criticism came not only from secular people, but also some religious leaders. A few among the latter, such as the moderate Islamic thinker Hüseyin Hatemi, have even called for total abandonment of the practice, which he sees not as an undeniable component of Islam, but as a tradition bound by time. “At the prophet’s time, animals were slaughtered for the hungry pilgrims who traveled for days to reach the Kaabah,” he wrote two years ago. “Today, we Muslims don’t really need this ‘meat festival.’”

Meatpacking for Congo

Most practicing Muslims in Turkey seem to have found a middle way, though, between Dr. Hatemi’s bold reformism and the old way of backyard slaughter. They increasingly prefer to use the Internet or phone to make a donation of a certain amount (between 250 to 350 Turkish Liras) to charities that do the job for them in modern and hygienic slaughterhouses and then distribute the meat to those who really need it. These days, television channels, newspapers and billboards are full of advertisements for such “sacrifice charities.”

Remarkably, some of these organizations are focused more on foreign countries than Turkey itself. An NGO named Doctors Worldwide-Turkey have been collecting money from religious Turks since 2005 in order to offer sacrifices as far away as Congo. “It is a county traumatized by malnutrition,” says Professor M. İhsan Karaman, the head of the organization. “They need this food more than anybody else.” Their Web site said the organization distributed meat to nearly 40,000 poor families across Congo last year.

Other “sacrifice charities” are even more ambitious. The Turkish Humanitarian Relief Foundation, or İHH, performs as its website proudly notes, “sacrificial slaughters in 110 regions and countries worldwide,” including Kenya, Zimbabwe, Haiti, Cuba, Palestine, Thailand or Vietnam. Every year poor Muslim communities in these countries receive thousands of packages of meat, the İHH notes, thanks to the donations of “Turkey’s charitable people.”

All this perhaps underlines not just the charity but also the growing globalism of Turkish Islam. In the old days, the meat from the sacrifice would go to neighbors in the same village or street. Yet the “neighbors,” it seems, now include Muslims all across the globe.

Seriously??? I can not believe this practice is going on. God (Allah) knows you believe in him if you talk to him everyday and lead a life that is good and kind to all living things as Mohammed said to do. The practice of sacrifice was for when God actually talked to Abraham that day. He didn't tell you to do it. What you do is meaningless except in your imagination and will to kill something. Many don't do so humanely either so don't fool yourselves or try to convince us that know the truth. Making excuses about what other countries do to their animals is same or worse, or you need to eat the meat, etc is just an excuse. YOU are responsible for YOU and if YOU are doing wrong, you can do better even if others are not. If you need to eat meat, eat it the way you do the rest of the year, buy the meat at the store. I'm don't making fun or being disrespectful, but really think about it, you are living in a another time and place and your country is suffering for it. You need to get back to Atturk's principles of modernization or your country will be left behind and your economy and people will suffer even further for it. Good people don't want to associate with such mean of spiritness. Mohammed said don't even smash a bug and yet you torture these animals all for party atmosphere to brag to God what you did. May God show you this is wrong and that you can show your love for Him by being kind to all His creations.

Salam. Some brothers/sisters think that animal sacrifice done by Muslims is wrong and also they say and post comments that eating animal meat (We Muslims are commanded by Allah -The God and Creator of all-the deniers and accepters- to eat only Halal Animal Meat). First of all we must note that like a steel structure, all human body is made of meat, bones, muscle, fat, water etc. We need similar substances to provide us strength and energy etc which is derived by Halal (Approved) animals. Like Iron is welded with similar substance to form a structure, human meat or body is strengthened by halal animal meat. Halal Meat (animals) and vegetables, fruits etc are all Created by Allah for us and we use them in the required quantity. In the olden times, the workers/engineers and the kings did not have the machines, cranes, bulldozers etc to build or demolish any buildings. They had to depend on human energry and strength which was provided by mainly eating MEAT from Animals. The first ancestors of ours did not have the fridge etc to preserve meat, fish etc so they had the weapons designed by themselves to catch fish, hunt and kill animals and birds etc. They were by natural requirement of those times, were forced to eat fresh food as they could not preserve the food in refrigerators or fridges. They could not have survived in dense forests, facing cruel and massive animals, without eating animal foods. Most of the protein we require is in the animal meat. The misguided and enemies of Islam, while killing muslims by using their bombs, educated soldiers and leaders are killing muslims every where but they try to distract people and raise hatragainst Islam and muslims by saying all such stupid things against eating animal meat. Allah who created us have permitted to eat halal animal meat and we don't need anyones permission. You may not accept your country's President. You might not have voted for him or her but still he is your president because there is absolutely no requirement for everybody to accept this factor for a country to be governed. Whereas in the case of God Almighty Allah, Allah let us free (like he let the rivers and birds free) either to accept Him only AS THE ONLY GOD for Worship and Obedience or accept anything as god(s) or reject everything and live as athiest. But Allah will ask you after your death, on the Day of Judgment that why did not you use your brain /intellectual property to accept God Almighty Allah and worship and obey HIM AS Your only God??? It is upto you to accept this truth here or accept it there in the next world and be the great loser. Here if you accept Allah, His Religion and Guidance-ISLAM and its practices, you shall be a WINNER OR GAINER but after death, even if you accept this truth, you will be a LOSER because Allah commanded us to accept truth here in this life which is given to us only once by Him. With Allah's guidance, you can live gracefully. It is not a great thing in the sight of Allah if the west has amassed weapons, aeroplanes, ships, space crafts etc. The genies and devils can do what you can not do even with all these your western gadgets. They can climb to the sky without anything. They can be in any place quickly even if it is thousands of miles away. They can catch a person and make him mad. I think the westerners are behold by these genies and devils and they say such hateful falsehood things against Islam and the customs of Islam. Hope they will be saved from such madness and come to Islam -the Guidance of Allah for their better life.

Sacrificing animals in backyards this day & age is ridiculous.. I am a practicing Muslim but am against Kurban Bayrami.. The animals should be “slaughter” properly at the slaughter house then the meat sold at local butchers.. We are in the new millennium people, wake up and push forward.

Guest - ESES (2009-11-29 23:43:09) :

my dear friends; Firstly; I think that god is not need of the human's sacrifice.God creates humans and later wants them to sacrifice animals every year for himself. We must respect people who love to eat meat and this is extremely needs of nutrition. Some people like to eat meat or the other like to eat vegetables. This is just prefers of humnan. Nobody cant charge of each other prefering of food.Everybody eats white meat from chicken, fish...They are butchered, too like ships or cows.I am opposed to sacrifice animal savage.I wish human sacrificed animals in a good condition and with humanistic emotion. As a result; The ignorance is the biggest sacrifice of human future..

Guest - bob (2009-11-29 16:16:16) :

hehhe ridiculous.how are related art to vegetables i cant imagine:D THE SMARTEST before loving so much and showing repesct to animal try to love Humans.maybe you turn to your roots:D

To "Brian" (who has a little brain, and others who are addicted to animal meat): Do not forget or read the history and learn that as soon as early humans started farming vegitables, fruits and cereals, they started becoming civilized and advancing in sciences, technologies and arts. History is very clear on that. Killing animals for food is nothing but savagery; humans gain only bad health out of animal food, like obesity, and cholesterol which is the leading cause of death in humans.

Guest - BOB (2009-11-28 17:04:56) :

yep yep you are so right so called ''SMART'' man.maybe you are a vegeteran but its not my fault. There are some animals meat that can be eaten by humans and some other that cant.So you got noutrition from vagetebles but that not enough and if u think that much of them are produced with inorganic substances. Why we ''expect you'' havent heard abotu these animals killing protests which critized them.maybe 2-3 article no more cause my man they are benefiting by their meat as well as economical aspect. That's true but you are freely to thing different.Just not say thats a primitive process Cause is holy in my religion.with repect to you and other commentators

I am a civil servant from Assam (India). The Turkish endeavour to replace the "meat festival" of Muslims with efforts of “sacrifice charities” is most welcome. Are Muslims from other countries allowed to join in? I mean that Muslims in India are used to slaughtering animals near their homes and hearths on the day of Bairam; and in the process, they pollute their environment and conscience, and also kick up a conflict with their Hindu compatriots. Instaed of such unhealthy process, can they just send money by credit card/ etc. to Turkey for such sacrifices that go to chartity in needy countries. Of course, would the companies undertaking such practices, be able to assure the money-senders that their money has been properly used.

Guest - Human (2009-11-28 13:24:01) :

From what I read I infer that the justification for the sacrifice is that this is what was done in the time of the prophet. At that time, no doubt, pilgrimages were made on foot. Do today's pilgrims go by foot ? If not, I sense a certain amount of hypocrisy in the 'cherry picking' of traditions.

Guest - Brian (2009-11-28 12:48:12) :

Vural, firstly you have an aversion to meat generally and you are obviously a vegetarian. Let me make a point to you as an expert in this field. If your ancestors and their predecessors in the stone age and earlier did NOT eat meat you would not have had the basic intelligence to be able to write your opinion on this website. In fact, you would still be a small brained creature falling prey to the more intelligent carnivores and omnivores. It was animal protein that gave you your intelligence Vural. Just look at the facts....cats, dogs, pigs, chimpanzees, tigers, lions, bears dolphins, humans...all carnivore or omnivore, all large brained highly intelligent creatures. Now..we have.. cows, sheep, goats, deer, horses, all lacking intelligence, small brained and available for domestication and total human control. ALL vegetarians. This is no accident. This is biological and physiological fact! If our ancestors didn't eat meat, we would be the sacrificial lambs! If we all became vegetarians tomorrow Vural, it just a few hundred generations our IQ's would drop, and we would begin to regress to our evolutionary not so intelligent past. Animal protein grew your brain Vural, don't forget that.

Guest - Vural Korkmaz (2009-11-28 07:12:19) :

To "bob": Obviously you are not following the news about reactions World-wide to massacres of whales, seals and other animals, and legal remedies provided throughout the World press. But no animal abuse elsewhere can justify the animal abuse in Turkiye for the name of Allah and Islam, or in any country for any religion. It is still true that killing animals and eating them is nothing short of stone-age era, savage, animal abuse. A religion should not based on such stone-age era, savage, animal abuse. That is another reason Islam needs much needed reforms. We still can obtain our nourishment from vegitables and grains in much healtier ways without killing animals in stone-age savagery. Not only for food, animals are abused in Turkiye on a daily basis: dogs and are killed for pleasure, bears are forced to live and tortured in very dismal conditions to entertain public called dancing, draft animals like donkeys, horses, mules and cows live absolutely missable and torturous lives in the hands of their cruel and merciless owners.

Guest - AtheistTurk (2009-11-28 03:09:27) :

Repulsive practice. The charity to African nations is a positive aspect though.

Guest - Dean Parry (2009-11-28 03:05:25) :

Are hungry Muslims the only people to benefit from this sacrifice, or is the meat used for all the poor? There are people of all faiths who are poor and hungry.

Guest - Guest - Wife (2009-11-28 02:28:54) :

As a christian, I think that the movement of Turks to use this holy slaughter to benefit those who do not have the resources to feed themselves and still celebrate the faithfulness of Abraham is a beautiful thing. Blessed is he who sacrafices himself in the name of God.

Guest - bob (2009-11-27 22:48:34) :

one of the friends doesnt know the the reality of Kurban Bayram and is talking about animal and human rights.first of all its obligated for all muslims who have a normal revenue to make this. This Holy day gather the person, cousşns friends and people to pray and to remember God's Bontys given to Humankind.İn order to develop friendship and brotherhood between people. You are freely to make your comment.why nobody does make his voices when thousands of whales are killed from japanose or when canadian people kill seal and when china or korean eats dogs meal or when in spain Killing a Torro slowly watched by so called ''modernize'' people.before making comment think twice to not insult anyone.

Guest - Vural Korkmaz (2009-11-27 17:24:25) :

Killing an animal, regardless how "acceptable" done, and eating it is a savage tradition from stone-ages and definitely animal abuse. A religion should not based on such a savage, animal abuse. Humans should stop killing animals for food. Shame, shame, shame!!!!

Guest - Mahir Macit (2009-11-27 17:07:03) :

Dearest , scrifising a animal in the- Kurabn Bayram -has nothing to do with Arab pagancy , it is however a ritual order by God almighty to the faithfull in remembernce of the saga of Prohpher Ibrham and how he was on the verge of scrifising his son Ishmael .
