Midfielder Rodrigo Tello scored the only goal as Beşiktaş became the first team to win in the Champions League at Old Trafford in almost five years with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Wednesday night.

Already-qualified United had not lost at home in their previous 23 Champions League matches, since a 1-0 defeat to AC Milan in February 2005.

Beşiktaş became the second Turkish team to end Manchester’s long unbeaten runs. Fenerbahçe’s 1-0 victory in Manchester on Nov. 30, 1996, was the home team’s first home loss on the European stage in more than 40 years.

A deflected effort from Chilean winger Tello was enough Wednesday for Beşiktaş, which had only picked up one point from its previous four matches.

The victory also helped Beşiktaş keep up its hopes for finishing third in Group B and earn a berth in Europa League.

Beşiktaş coach Mustafa Denizli saluted his players for a historic victory for Turkish football.

"To come to Manchester United and play at Old Trafford, we know it's very difficult to win games here," Denizli told a post-game press conference.

"We're obviously very pleased with the result. The whole world knows what a big team United is. The players did their duties, and everyone did the job that was asked of them."

Denizli also found time to praise goalkeeper Rüştü Reçber, who made two crucial saves in the dying minutes of the game.

“To win such a game, your goalkeeper and defenders must be extremely successful,” he said. “Everybody who has some knowledge of international football knows how good Rüştü is. He gives great confidence to his teammates.”

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson fielded a largely young side and was proud of the way they played even if it meant the undefeated home run came to an end.

"I think we were a bit anxious, but it’s not a bad thing – they're young and you expect that," said the Scot.

"It was a stellar performance in terms of the flow of the game, and we've shown some really good things," added Ferguson, who said he might yet field a similar side against Wolfsburg.

its a good result for besiktas and thats it. it doesnt mean nothing overall as besiktas will go out of europe. it is not a win for turkish football as the player wasnt even turkish who scored the goal and most werent even turkish on the field. this is why the national team isnt stronger too many foreigners at the big clubs and the turks dont get to play enough big matches for these clubs. yes rustu is turkish but everyone knows he is good it will good for development if uefa brings in a quota system

I was really happy for Besiktas, even though I am a Galatasaray supporter. Rustu was incredible! He saved it for them in those last few minutes.
