PM: We listened people’s sensitivity over Israel

Font Size: Larger|Smaller

The government said it paid attention to the sensitivities of the Turkish people when canceling an international military exercise in which Israel was also supposed to take part, the Anatolia news agency reported Wednesday.

The Anatolia new agency said the statement was made by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during an interview with the private Al-Arabia channel.

Erdoğan said alongside with the people’s sensitivities the government has also monitored the diplomatic sensitivities with regard to the cancellation. And he pointed out that the government moved in line with the conscience of the people, which sought the exclusion of Israel from the military.

Erdoğan recalled that during the Israeli operation more than 1,000 innocent people were killed, schools and hospitals were destroyed.

On Iran’s nuclear program that caused tension with the Western world, Erdoğan stated that they were seeking a region free of nuclear weapons. Erdoğan also noted that Israel in fact had the nuclear weapons but it had never been discussed by the international community.

Order of events: August 2005- Israel withdraws all troops and all civilians (22 towns & villages evacuated & demolished), formally ending 'occupation of Gaza'. June 2007- Hamas initiates a bloody coup against Fatah/Palestinian Authority in Gaza, and takes control. 2007-2009 - Hamas launches over 8000 rockets and missiles aimed at all Israeli cities, towns and villages within range of Gaza. These missiles were tactically launched by Hamas from urban areas in the Gaza Strip to avoid Israeli counter-attacks.. Jan 2009 - After several Egyptiuan brokered cease-fire arrangements were broken by Hamas, Israel launched a military strike upon Hamas controlled Gaza. By all accounts, around 1000 Paestinians were killed in the one month operation. The Israelis claim over 700 were Hamas operatives/terrorists; Hamas claim around 300 were their operatives, the rest civilians. The truth is, as most Hamas operatives were wearing civilian clothes, and operating out of civilian houses, schools, hospitals... the true balance of Hamas operatives vs non-combatants is pretty unverifiable. What is verifiable, is that Hamas deliberately targeted Israel civilians with missiles and rockets attacks for years, leading up to the Israeli operation to protect them. And that Israel solely used surgical strikes (no carpet bombing or indiscriminate artillery fire) aimed solely at the Hamas operatives. If the populations of Istanbul or Ankara were similarly targeted for years by thousands of terrorist missiles, I believe the Turkish Government & Army would respond in the same way as the Israelis - as would every responsible Government in the world.

Yes, according to the Israeli government. I do not ask you to take their version at face value, so don't take the Hamas version at face value. Investigate further, if you can, because many of the claims are not honest buy simply canons trying to sink the enemy. War is ugly any way you put it but the Hamas strategy is to undermine its enemy through media traps and grossly manipulative propoganda. This is the basis, along with pictures of a lot of bombs followed by screaming in a hazy context, I am sure, for your claim that the IDF targets UN schools, civilian infrastructure, homes, etc. while the reality is Hamas situates themselves in civilian areas and is then delighted when they have a clip to send to CNN - a strategic victory. I can assure you Israelis are not cold to any deaths and feel sorrow for loss of innocents, let alone 'target' them. That is nonsense, and that is why if TV programs create impressions otherwise, it is hurtful and it is malicious propoganda which is the plague of despotic regimes, not modern countries.

The key phrase is "according to the Israeli government" which accepts it military's continuous cover up of whatever it does inthe name of disproportionate response to the firing of rockets that indiscriminantely fell on civilian areas in contrast to the highly accurate bombs'missiles and phosphorous shells that targeted UN schools, food storehouses, civilian infrastructure, police barracks, homes and use civilians as shields. In the aftermath of all that it continues to blockade imports of needed material to rebuild necessary structures that deprive civilians from carrying out normal living even at the minimal scale. School children are deprived of getting an education and businesses cannot function. The UN report which condemned both Hamas and Israel for human rights violations is dismissed as biased by Israel which did not allow any investigation to be carried out in Israel. How long can cry baby Israel use its status as the professional victim to cover its aggressive policies using Hamas as an excuse to justify illegal and immoral practices. the "and not one soldier ever meant to kill a non-combatant intentionally, despite malicious and anti-semitic TV programs broadcast in your country." reflects this mentality which accepts its government's propaganda on face value disregarding some reports by IDF soldiers about crimes committed. The daily programs on al-Jazeera which showed the unrelenting bombing of civilian areas were perhaps not watched in Israel or seen as "biased" reporting would have been enough to change even the most hard hearted Israelis who shed tears over their few civilian loses and the mostly psychogical damage which was nevertheless unIslamic and inhumane. Does every condemnation of Israeli cruelty and oppression have to be seen as malicious and anti-Semitic? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FYI according to the Israeli government less than 300 killed out of about 1,100 were non-combatants. Then the question is how many of them were used as human shields by Hamas, or tragically caught in the line of fire in this war and in general held hostage to Hamas policies. What is sure is that this war was meant to stop rockets falling on Israeli towns for years, and not one soldier ever meant to kill a non-combatant intentionally, despite malicious and anti-semitic TV programs broadcast in your country.
