The Iranian president Tuesday praised the visiting Turkish prime minister for his clear stance against Israel and supportive position on the Islamic republic’s controversial nuclear program.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said he appreciated Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s stands on Iran’s atomic program and on Israel, believed to be the Middle East’s sole but undeclared nuclear state, the presidential Web site reported.

Erdoğan’s visit comes as the world awaits Tehran’s response to a nuclear deal that could ease tensions with the West. Erdoğan recently accused Western powers of treating Iran unfairly over its nuclear program and referred to the Iranian president as a “friend.”

“When an illicit regime possesses nuclear arms, one cannot talk about depriving other nations of a peaceful nuclear program,” Ahmadinejad said during talks with the Turkish prime minister. “Your clear stance toward the Zionist regime had a positive effect in the world, especially the Islamic world, and I am sure that everyone was satisfied.”

“The more regional countries expand their ties and get closer to each other, the more they can remove their problems and limit the ill-wishers that have plots against them,” the Iranian president added. “Iran-Turkey cooperation would benefit both countries, the region and the whole Islamic world.”

In remarks that were his first since the U.N.-drafted offer was put forth last week, Ahmadinejad said Iran would persist with its nuclear program despite international concerns. Though he did not directly refer to the draft, his comments could indicate Iran’s hardening stance toward the U.N. proposal.

Tehran is expected to respond to the offer this week.

Geneva talks

In a press meeting following his visit with Ahmadinejad on Tuesday, Prime Minister Erdoğan welcomed Iran’s stand during talks with the world powers in Geneva over its nuclear drive, and said: “In the first Geneva meeting, Iran has put forth a sincere picture. They have said, ‘Let’s come up with a consensus, work together and work with the process within the framework of this consensus.’”

U.N. Security Council permanent members “all have nuclear arsenals and then there are countries that are not members of the International Atomic Energy Agency that also have nuclear weapons,” Erdoğan said, apparently referring to Israel.

The Turkish prime minister said he had the chance to discuss a number of issues with Ahmadinejad, including bilateral relations, the economy, trade, cultural topics and energy. “We had the chance to evaluate the measures that can be taken against terrorism,” added Erdoğan. “We had the chance to discuss this issue in a national, regional and, of course, a global perspective.”

Before meeting with Ahmadinejad, Erdoğan held talks with Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi, who said the two sides should “consolidate their current relations.”

“The circumstances in both nations have created a golden opportunity, and by using this opportunity we should further consolidate our existing relations,” said Rahimi, as quoted by Mehr news agency. Rahimi also commended Erdoğan’s stance on Israel as a “valuable act in defending the rights of the Palestinian people.”

Erdoğan, who arrived in Iran at the head of a high-ranking political and business delegation Monday, was expected to hold talks with the country’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review went to press Tuesday afternoon.

You're completely right, we can't have one of the world’s worst regimes threatening other countries with preemptive strikes or nuclear weapons. You couldn't have a more subtly oppressive, rogue regime than the current state of Israel, which at times seems to emulate the tactics of some formerly notoriously oppressive ex-communist states like Romania, Poland and East Germany. Instead of imprisoning the children of dissenters within ‘state approved’ foster homes and banishing the dissident parents to soviet era gulags, the Israelis just bulldoze their homes and olive orchards, force pregnant women to wait hours at checkpoints until they miscarry their babies, shoot stone throwing children, and confiscate Palestinian lands. As horrible a thought as it would be to have 'mad' mullahs in power in any regime, even they would not have the devious expertise to do what Israel does on a daily basis. Here is a regime that is so smart they are able to plan an attack on defenseless Palestinians by very carefully provoking the radical elements to violence first, and fool almost the whole evangelical Christian world into supporting their plans under the guise of, “We are God’s chosen people, the fulfillment of the return of God’s chosen people to their promised land”. Even though they killed Jesus, their promised Messiah, 2000 years ago, requesting that “His blood be upon them and upon their children.”, they have amply demonstrated their ability to deceive the Christian West,( ..as the dumb Goyim cattle they have proven to be..), with their subtleties, and used the children of their American Christian supporters to fight their wars for them, dying for smoke screen causes of which they were unable to discern the political agendas behind.

As a Turk, I say to all enemies of Islam; you can't divide us; Turkey and Iran are brotherly Muslim countries. We will put an end to Western and Israeli hegemonia in the region. We will confront you with all our might. I promise.

I agree Real Life, but don't generalise and label Erdogan & co as "Turks". They do not represent any decent Turk - I have nothing in common with him and his ilk. Rest in peace Neda and to all the brave Iranians who sadly died when standing up against the oppressive Iranian regime.

Fed up with being a small fish in a big pond, Mr. Erdogan is now trying to become a big fish in a small pond. This is quite usual for those with Middle Eastern mindsets and is nothing for the world to concern itself with.

It is a grate shame to see the country and people I love so much, taking a dangerous rout. Instead of going forward, Erdogan brings Turkey to a dark era. I pray that the spirit of ATATURK will eventually prevail. Turkish people, wake up before this is too late. You have so much to be proud of, dont throw it away.

I can not believe what I am reading. Iran a friend of Turkey? Support Irans nuclear program. Iran who supports most of the worlds terrorist groups and officially state that Jihad and suicide bombings is ok. Is that the best friend Turkey can get and want? Erdogan have in my view gone from being ok as a leader of Turkey to a total disaster for Turkey. I can tolerate the head scarf issues and believe that letting everybody go to university in the long run will decrease the amount of people wearing head scarf. I thought he would stop there but he is moving quite rapidly towards fundamentalistic views and friends. Not good for Turkey. Ataturk would not be happy if he would see what Erodgan is doing right now.

I am extremely pleases to see the Turkish PM in Iran. Iran and Turkey are the two pillars of stability in the region, and they should keep working on expanding and enhancing their neighborly relationship that has lasted for hundreds of years. Good luck to both nations. Anooshirvan, San Francisco, California

I'm sure the secular left will despise and paint this diplomatic meeting as unhealthy and volatile for Turkey. But Turkey should have other plans. It must continue to engage with its neighbors and reconcile any differences it may have, regardless of what Israel and Europe may think. This is why I support Erdogan and his efforts to engage with Iran. This is what the Turkish people want and so its a must that the AKP do and give what the people want, not want the Generals want.

Prime Minister Erdogan deserves appreciation for speaking truth. Let it be a lesson to arab leaders to learn to start speaking truth. Happy to see the visionary turkey leadership reminding the Ottoman empire Well done Turkey Uphold justice.
