Pardoned convict arrives in Istanbul
Güler Zere, a 37-year-old convicted cancer patient, arrived in Istanbul on Saturday night after President Abdullah Gül pardoned her last week, one year after she applied for reprieve.
A militant of an illegal far-left organization, Zere was in jail for 14 years of a 34-year sentence. She was diagnosed with oral cancer last year, but her sentence was not revoked or pardoned despite several medical reports concluding that she could not be treated in prison or in a hospital ward dedicated to prisoners.
Zere flew to Istanbul from the southern province of Adana, where she was staying in Balcalı Hospital. Her parents accompanied Zere. She was hospitalized at the Istanbul University Medical School Hospital.
Zere’s doctor, Yavuz Dizdar, said her medical situation is not bad but that she had some nursing problems. The Turkish Medical Association, or TTB, concluded last month that Zere’s cancer had become terminal and that she had no chance of recovery.
