In a surprise visit to Amman on Tuesday, Israel's prime minister has tried to mobilize Jordan's king to persuade the Palestinians to resume direct peace talks.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's quick trip to neighboring Jordan came after a Palestinian document noted that President Barack Obama's envoy, George Mitchell, is also pressing the Palestinians to restart direct peace negotiations with Israel, according to the Associated Press.

Netanyahu's office said he had two hours of talks with King Abdullah II, emphasizing "the need to ensure direct, serious and effective negotiations" toward "two states for two peoples."

Netanyahu's last visit to Amman was in May 2009. Since then, he and Abdullah have barely even spoken by telephone, and their staffs rarely contact each other.

2tireofBS, you keep saying "abide by the UN resolution", and at the same time arguing that Israel has stolen the land from Palestinians. BUT, in 1947, the UN resolution called for establishment of a Jewish and Arab states which the Arabs didn't accept and opened war on the Jews and lost. How do you mitigate the conflict between both of your opinions: as a proud UN supporter and an Israel slumberer? Could it be that you only support UN resolutions when they are against Israel???

2Sid, 30 years ago, Israel gave Egypt, with population of 50Million and a major enemy, 70-80% of its territories for the sake of peace. Do you know, why Israel is reluctant to give 40-50% of the territories to ~4 Million Palestinians? Admit that it sounds strange. The "small" difference, is an announcement of the Palestinians that they are willing to accept the Jewish state's right to exist. That's all! No Palestinian leader has accepted that. The Hamas for sure not (search the web for the Hamas mandate and you'll read that it calls for the total destruction of Israel), and not even the Palestinians authority mandate (that haven't changed from the time of the PLO led by Yassar Arrafat). until you have in your list a requirement from the Palestinians, they will not have their country, which may be their plan after all (see Kangaroo's advice to them)

2Kangaroo , you are so right! 20 years ago there was a dramatic change in the Israeli public opinion, where the left wings won the elections and marked the acceptance of two states solution. Everybody was sure that the conflict is about to end, because Israel was willing to negotiate a Palestinian country. Everybody was amazed when the Palestinians refused an offer for 99% of the territories made by former PM Ehud Barak (2001) and later by former PM Olmert (2006). People begin to think that the Palestinians don't want to have an agreement, but rather "wait it out" until they are a majority. Why refuse a state of their own, unless it is for the "full prize"??? That's very unfortunate, since they are backtracing the same mistake they did 63 years ago, when they refused the UN resolution calling for a seperation of Israel to an Arab and Jewish states. They went for the "big prize", launching war with the aid of seven Arab countries, and lost.

Palestinians should forget the independence and be part of the greater Israel and work within the system to become the rulers of Israel in the very near future. How simple! Give up freedom to obtain freedom and power to rule all of Israel. Why not just do it? The population explosion should be their weapon, not rockets and guns.

Lets not be gullible here, why is Israel trying so hard to negotiate with Palestinians when there is a crystal clear UN Resolutions that was past years ago. Why not just agree to it? Obviously, Israel as always try and try in screwing the Palestinians to get more and more land and force them to sign the agreement. If Israel, US and the EU were serious about it they would comply by the UN resolutions. If US and the EU were serious about peace in the Middle East, they would and should force Israel to comply with the UN resolutions as they tend to force countries like Iraq, Iran, North Korea etc etc. Do people internationally trust these bodies who in true fact in defence of a country that is illegally occupying a nation. It is an embarrasment and defies logic. How then would you have peace in the Middle East, when the key players are trying to steal as much as possible for Israel. It is just a big joke.

Israel's policy regarding the Palestinian issue is the same as it ever was: play on time. Oh yes, Mr Netanyahu will show his willingness to negotiate (and sure as hell, Israel is a master of the negotiation game) only to tell the world "we have tried everything but the Palestinian leadership doesn't want to play ball". They always can be sure of US support, as no US president can be ever elected without the Jewish lobby support. And after all, they have the world media on their side, too. Meanwhile 42% of the West Bank is occupied by Jewish settlements; Gaza is an open air prison. Remove the blockade and remove a good part of the west Bank settlements, and stop evicting Palestinians from their homes in East Jerusalem in order to grab more land to create a de facto situation on the ground. That would be a good start for negotiations, Mr Netanyahu. Israel needs to vote these hardliners out and change its repressive and racist policies!

Amazing, the Israelis are running after the Palestinians to try and convince them to have direct talks over the creation of a state for the Palestinians.... And the Palestinians are refusing until Israel agrees with the final state of the negotiations.... Upside down world... In this rate, the Palestinians will never have their own state; the Israelis will never agree to another evacuation without agreement, especially after the two last times (e.g Lebanon creating the powerful Hezbollah and Gaza creating the Hamas)

He seems to be getting along just grand with everyone except Turkey. Funny that, because they all just seem to be getting along grand with Israel and forgetting Turkey.
