Israel, Turkey hold first military drill since row

Font Size: Larger|Smaller

Israel and Turkey held a joint military drill in the Turkish capital, Ankara, an official said Tuesday in a first cooperation of this kind since Turkey excluded Israel from an excersise in October, sparking a diplomatic row.

Israeli and Turkish army units conducted a joint search and rescue exercise in Ankara between Nov. 3 and 5, the military official told Agence France-Presse news agency, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Israel's relations with Turkey took a downturn in January when Ankara launched unprecedented criticism of Israel’s devastating war on the besieged Gaza Strip. The tensions climaxed in a public row between Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdošan and Israeli President Shimon Peres at a high-profile international gathering in Davos, Switzerland in January.

In October, Turkey excluded Israel from joint NATO military drills and said that bilateral ties would continue to suffer unless Israel ends "the humanitarian tragedy" in Gaza and revives peace talks with the Palestinians.

Zarif,i fully agree with you. I'm glad to see further cooperation within the military, what the stupid government (Erdogan) says should not affect their military connections.

Maybe a few more facts can help expand this very narrow focus report: + Israel didnt beseige Gaza. Border crossing to Egypt is kept hermetically closed by the Egyptians. + Israel defended itself against continuous rocket attacks launched, delibarately, from densely populated civilian areas. + Erdogan prefers Bashir over Netanihau, which he openly stated. Erdogan called for annuling Israel's membership in the UN. These are even worse acts of racism and ignorance than the walk out scene with President Peres. With this type of policy I dont think that Israel should continue its friendly relationship with the Turkish government. It should continue its friendly relationship with teh part of the Turkish nation that sees it for what it is: a nation like al others. Not worse. Certainly not better, either. But worthy of minimal respect and of teh roght to defend itself. Israel can also only hope that liberal Kemalist thinking can win over Turkey again and save its democracy from being consumed by Erdogan and other Islamists.
