Fire on Turkish ship injures two
A fire on a Turkish cargo ship off the coast of Brazil has wounded at least two crewmen, the owner confirmed to the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review on Monday.
MV Düden, with a 27-member crew aboard, sent a distress call to Brazilian authorities Sunday night, saying the ship was on fire 260 kilometers off the coast. In response, the Brazilian navy dispatched two frigates, Bosisio and Constituichao, to the scene.
“We have one or two seriously injured,” the ship's owner Kemal Dinç told the Daily News, adding that navy personnel from the frigates will "probably be on deck" by Tuesday.
He refused to comment on what caused the blaze or the nationality of the crewmen.
When contacted by the Daily News, the Brazilian navy also confirmed the incident, but did not give any more details.
It was the second time that MV Düden has been in trouble in the last four months. On Aug. 2, the ship was attacked by pirates off the coast of Nigeria while delivering a consignment of rice from Thailand to Lagos. Two crewmen were injured during the attack.
