British artist fined for collage depicting Turkish prime minister

Font Size: Larger|Smaller

British artist Michael Dickinson has been fined and may face jail time for refusing to pay the fine for insulting Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in an art piece called "Good Boy," the BBC reported Wednesday.

The collage has the prime minister’s photograph superimposed onto the body of a dog with the words ‘We will not be Bush's dog.’ Charges against Dickinson were first filed in 2006 when he exhibited a collage called Best in Show, which depicts the prime minister as a dog being patted by President George Bush.

The Turkish court handed down an acquittal for mockery for the first collage in September 2008, but when Dickinson displayed the "Good Boy" collage in protest, a new case was filed against the 59-year-old Briton who lives in Istanbul.

The court has handed down a monetary penalty that Dickinson has said he will refuse to pay. The preceding judge has given the artist until March 9 to pay the fine, at which time he may face jail time or deportation.

Dickinson has told the press he does not think what he did is criminal. He added that it is not right that – as Istanbul begins its tenure as a European Culture Capital – the Turkish government should restrict artistic freedoms, especially those rooted in the freedom of speech.

Quote Fatih "but mind you when a muslim writer started ridiculing Blairs Iraq policy the mousqe he went only for friday prayers were shut down and him deported under the new terrorism laws, he was inciting "hate speech". "......Fatih, think you are being a little economical with the facts here aren't you?. I think you will find the writer you refer was deported not so much about speaking out about Blair's Iraq policy more for his call for jihad against Britian. So comparing Mr Dickenson's picture to a man who called for the deaths of innocent people - not quite the same is it?

I really dont understand some people who comes to comment here only to say how much Turkey is unsuitable to join EU. Is that even supposed to be offensive? Do you guys realize 80% of whoever you ask on the street in Turkey they arent slightly bothered about joining the EU. As for the story jail for something like this is a bit too much, I remember the Sun here in UK at the start of Iraq war did the same drawing of Bliar (Tony Blair) much the same way (except it was a poodle, not a bulldog), and everyone was fine with it, but mind you when a muslim writer started ridiculing Blairs Iraq policy the mousqe he went only for friday prayers were shut down and him deported under the new terrorism laws, he was inciting "hate speech". Lucky this guy only got a fine I'd say.

I have enjoyed living in Turkey and love the people but I am continually astounded about how touchy, sensitive, and quite frankly paranoid they are at times. Turks need to lighten up. Everything is taken way too seriously, not unlike commissars in the Soviet Union. Vural Korkmaz epitomizes this mentality though I'm sure he is ordinarily a pleasant sort.

Maybe the Turkish coutr will convict him to life imprisonment. Then the world could watch "Midnight Express" the sequel... Come on Turkey, grow up! Sincerely, Harry Garifallidis Toronto, Canada

the collages by Mr. Dickinson were not meant to insult.. but merely meant to make people think. That is the problem with this place and it's people.. any thought or word about someone that is not meant to just praise.. is taken as an insult and people's insecurities and over sensitivities come out.. in rage and vengence. It is sad that Turkish people can say what they want about anyone.. or any subject.. be as judgemental as they want to be.. but do not dare to accept any type of criticism.. whether constructive or merely meant as satire. Mr Dickinson actually has been in Turkey a long time and he really loves this place.. I don't know what he thinks of it today. I am sure he still loves the place.. just is maybe sad about the laws.

Grow up Vural Korkmaz. Learn to laugh at yourself ! Leaders of Western countries get laughed at & 'lampooned' daily. The fact that the Turkish / Muslims can't laugh shows a distinct lack of maturity. We saw exactly the same with the Danish cartoons & even Rushdie. It strikes me bombings & killings in the Muslim world can be ignored but squiggles on paper...... by a non Muslim, are more likely to draw anger. Do you really think your priorities are right ? This has nothing to do with race or insults but everything to do with live & let live & tolerance .

This is really "funny". Have you seen how all the politicians, the royal family members, and the religion leaders, including the pope are depicted in the papers? And no one minds! Why should they? So what is so special about Erdogan? For heavens sake give up on your silly draconian laws! It puts Turkey in par with dark ages!

Turkey has much growing up to do before it 'understands' what a democracy & freedom of speech is. Turks also need to cultivate a sense of humour & stop being so utterly petty.

What do we expect of a country that tried to put their only nobel prize winner in the recent past behind bars?

Political satire has existed since....well, since politics has existed. Unfortunately satire seems sadly lacking in Turkey. As far as Vural's comment "freedom of speech is not freedom to insult", if you place the head of an ordinary person, say me, on the dog, would I have the benefit of a law to protect me? Would I be able to take the matter to court and obtain a conviction? Of course not. Mr. Erdogan claims to be a man of the people, from this case it appears not true.

Please!!! Stop that silly talk about racism!! To play out that "racism card" all the time just makes us look silly. Just look at how GW Bush was presented in US by the American newspapers. There were more pictures/cartoons like this one in a day in american press with GW Bush, than we have seen of Mr Erdogan since he started as a PM.

@Vural Korkmaz Europeans invented democracy, so who are you to tell us what democracy is?? Who are you to tell us we have a wrong understanding of democracy? Freedom of Speech is not in place to protect the speech we like, it is in place to protect the speech we do not like. You peoples need to get thicker skin and stop crying like babies just because somebody criticizes you.

If Michael Dickinson's piece was intended to be insulting, then it was insulting. It's difficult to understand why he would produce the piece for any other reason than to cause offence. The UK has a great art heritage that's not enhanced by this work.

Who needs EU? Is EU God or panacea of all problems? Turkey can exist on its own or within its region. On the other hand the PM should not take offence in any sense, but encourage him. There are definitely many people in Turkey ( mainly those prone to western influence) who would like to depict him much worse than a dog!

Freedom of speech IS NOT freedom to insult!!! If you hide behind freedom of speech and insult others, you are only abusing democracy. This is may be your understanding of democracy, but it is wrong. Your victim do not have to tolerate your insults just because you are ignorant. Somehow you have to learn what real democracy is.

Oh Donha get over it. Your anti-Turkish rantings are getting tiresome. Don't you have anything better to do? Do you think the Netherlands judicial system is the greatest in the world?

Yet another reason why Turkey is absolutely not suitable to join the EU. If Erdogan can't take a bit of ribbing in the newspaper then there is no place for him at the EU table. Sooner or later everyone there gets 'tooned.
