Bartholomew won the public

MEHMET ALİ BİRAND

We are arguing about Patriarch Bartholomew’s latest statement. To tell the truth, it couldn’t have been more effective or outstanding.

The patriarch put his mark on a gorgeous PR success story. Talking to the prime minister several times or obtaining promises from the minister of education would not have been this effective.

I read all the papers since the statement was made. I watched TV programs and the news and examined the statements. The result is very clear:

- The patriarch knew how to draw the public’s attention. He put the reopening of the Halki Seminary on top of the agenda.

- The patriarch has received support from the public that was not anticipated to such an extent. Even those judges who view the Patriarchate as the devil’s empire in a traditional sense have shown sympathy and accepted that the state has exhibited a wrong attitude in the Halki Seminary issue.

- Politicians who oppose the patriarch were forced to keep their voices down. Besides, none were convincing. Foreign Minister Davutoğlu, with his first reaction statement, has not been accepted either. So much so that even the prime minister was quite easygoing. He did not exaggerate the incident and remained behind Davutoğlu.

Now it is the Ministry of Education and Çubukçu’s turn

So what will happen next?

Will the same old story remain?

Will there be any steps taken toward the reopening of the Halki Seminary?

Now it is Çubukçu’s turn. Let’s see if she will step in immediately.

By the way, one more note...

I can’t help but be happy about ongoing arguments. The best one was the statement made by Mihail Vasiliadis, the editor in chief of Apogevmatini, a daily primarily targeting the Greek community in Turkey, on CNNTürk’s program “Tarafsız Bölge,” hosted by Ahmet Hakan. I’m not sure a Greek citizen of Turkish origin would have been able to protect his rights on any of the Greek TV channels. My congratulations to Vasiliadis. He proved to be a genuine Turkish citizen.

Isn’t there any presentable man left in this nation?

I can’t believe what I’ve been reading and hearing.

I get the creeps whenever I take a look at what we’ve been experiencing for the past few years. It seems we’ve been living in an empire of fear and have not taken notice of it.

The present scenery we are facing is scary.

It seems we’ve been living in an underworld full of people preparing coups and conspiracies, a world of political mobs and vulgar gangs. Some may be true and some may be exaggerated accusations, but investigations and operations done in succession reveal a completely different Turkey and the presence of hundreds of hidden cells and thousands of armed people running around.

Please take a look at the latest situation:

- Even if we set aside published allegations within the frame of the Ergenekon case due to lack of evidence, those based on concrete evidence suffice. To tell the truth, people have organized themselves for a coup.

- Armed organizations have established associations that are anti-Armenian, anti-Christian and anti-Greek. That’s how Hrant Dink was murdered. Priest Santoro and others were slain because they did missionary work. And all this happened in front of the eyes of the gendarmerie or police, who just watched.

- Gangs have formed with the slogan “Our country is indivisible” and are going on manhunts in order to shoot Kurds.

- Then there are also security forces that have participated in similar events or illegal deeds. Almost every day we encounter operations or gangs in which chiefs of security forces are involved, such as the scandal over the skin of the slaughtered animals after the Feast of the Sacrifice.

- And let’s not forget to add to all that the PKK with its sub-organizations, those taking up weapons in the name of Shariah, the Taliban and al-Qaeda.

What is this, how will we fix it?

Sometimes when we read the paper or watch news on TV, we perceive Turkey as a country in which armed people run around killing each other or try to rob places.

Maybe we encounter similar events in other countries. But they have not escalated this much.

Will we be able to fix it?

Looking back at the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s, I tell myself, “This will also pass.” But still I feel very uncomfortable.

Excellent, glad to see steps forward and not backwards. To accept the true and realize how the things are, you have nothing to fear that you will lost. Besides by realizing the true and say it open, you made a step forward of course. That means the mind goes more matured and is ready for moves, always together along the people. Turkey today live with the fear, is falling, just stop it. Turkey will be more in advance is has solved those problem earlier or if not commited those crimes. Nobody can blame the people, but those who educate wrong things. Greeks look always forward and don't have problem to make a fresh new start and to forget everything as long the otherside can change. Greece has showned this possibilities in the past and Turkey reject along with her old-fashioned and fear to people strategy. When Turkey act like terrorist, then everyone will handle Turkey as terrorist. As i noticed latest, Turkey vote and in fact kick out Kurdish from politics. What is the exception now, a victory or another lose? But rejecting Kurds from politics you give them a reason for a state awaking and division. No more blood, no more war. I would like to write more things, however, i am glad to see this article, very impressive and a very big change for Turkish Reporters and Media. This only move it can be a base for talks and further discussions for many topics. I hope the population of Turkey to wake up as soon as possible, cuz is already very late for Turkey to fix things, and to tell you honestly i prefer Turkey to fix those and change in a modern way of administration with base the freedom and one and clear goverment. No matter if Christian or Muslim, either Greek or Turkish... It matter to live nice and peacefull, we have nothing to lose. We should respect each other and all of us to exist with each way. That way is harmony. Even will publish this post or nice, glad if you read it! Just look deeper and see what you can understand and take from this message :-)

Why not work together and make Istanbul the Vatican of Turkey? There are 300 million Greek Othodox believers and other Christians who would love to come and visit the birthplace of Christianity and the seat of the Greek Othodox Church. Is there any better tourism oppurtunity for Turkey?

Mr. Birand wrote: "Armed organizations have established associations that are anti-Armenian, anti-Christian and anti-Greek". Very astute observation, sir. You could spot a needle in a haystack, without much effort, i would imagine.

Great viewpoint, Mr. Birand. Per your question, "Will we be able to fix it?". The answer to that is yes, if the Turkish media keeps promoting the message that individual rights are the most important thing. The rights of each individual-to free speech, to practice their religion freely, to assemble, to live without fear-are more important than any concept of nationalism. They are more important than flags and national symbols. They ARE the most important national symbol-a nation that embraces individual rights and liberty is a mature and confident nation. Coups and intrigue are only possible in an environment of fear and suppression of the news media. The best way to combat that is to freely allow media reporting and investigation. And the best way to combat the PKK is to give Kurdish groups a voice in the political process. There will be no support for terror groups when the Kurdish people feel they are an integral part of Turkey. Closing the DTP was a foolish mistake and will only serve to encourage support for terrorists.

Thank you for a very balanced and sensitive repsonse to what is obviously a very delicate issue. As a Greek citizen, and a Christian, I am a regular reader of this fine newspaper because of its objective analyses of Greek-Turkish and world affairs. Please, keep up the good work, and continue to educate and inform the Turkish people about the civic virtues of true tolerance and political freedom for all citizens, including minorities. Turkey is nowadays at a very critical juncture in its history, as an EU candidate. It is my fondest hope that the country will overcome nationalism in favor of a true patriotism which is forward-looking, progressive, as well as European-oriented -- for the sake of both the Turkish people and the stability and peace in this long troubled neighborhood.
