Armenia threatens Azerbaijan with Karabakh recognition

Font Size: Larger|Smaller

Armenia threatened to recognize the Azerbaijani enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh as an independent state if Baku takes military action to reclaim the territory.

"Armenia so far has not recognized the independence of Karabakh for only one reason – so that it does not become an obstacle in the process of peace negotiations," Armenian Presidential Spokesman Samvel Farmanian said in a statement. "If peace talks fail and military actions begin, nothing will prevent Armenia from recognizing the independence of Karabakh," he said.

Tensions over the disputed region have risen after Armenia and close Azerbaijani ally Turkey signed an historic deal to establish diplomatic ties and re-open their border.

On Saturday, Azerbaijani news agencies quoted President Ilham Aliyev as saying that Baku has the right to retake Nagorno-Karabakh by force if ongoing peace talks fail to produce any results.

Aliyev met with his Armenian counterpart Serge Sarkisian in Germany on Sunday for the sixth round of talks this year on resolving the conflict.

International mediators said in a statement after the talks that "progress was made" but that "some issues still remain open."

Backed by Yerevan, ethnic Armenian forces seized control of Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts from Azerbaijan in the early 1990s, in a war that claimed an estimated 30,000 lives.

Armenian and Azerbaijani forces are spread across a cease-fire line in and around Nagorno-Karabakh, often facing each other at close range, and shootings are common.

Azerbaijani media reported Monday that an Azerbaijani civilian had been shot dead by Armenian forces near the de facto border with Nagorno-Karabakh over the weekend, but the rebel region's armed forces denied the reports.

There is a concept called "international" borders. A concept that Armenians seem to have great difficulty with as they have a similar problem concerning their borders with Turkey too. Armenian forces went in and occupied large chunks of the territory of another UN member state. They attacked well defined and internationally recognized borders of another country. Massive ethnic cleansing, a little genocide here and there and then they are asking, "what is the problem"? Who cares and what matters how many Armenians lived there and what Romans did or not? Borders ARE borders. You can twist and turn, make excuses, rationalizations, create alternate facts and history (an Armenian specialty it seems!) and dance around this all you want. There will not be peace until this is resolved. People take their flags and lands rather seriously if you did not know yet.

Karabakh was sold to Armenians. So called, Artsakh could not in their dreams win it by force. Karabakh to most Armenians is a burden. Armenians in Armenia are starving, economy is in trouble. The legend of artsakh was written by a terrorist organization called "dashnakcutyun". Unfortunately, Georgian lands of Samche-Dzhavakhetia is next.

Hurriyet should be a bit more balanced when writing about such controversial issues. The enclave of Nagorno Karabakh was an Autonomous Oblast in the Soviet Union and had NEVER been a part of any independent Azerbajaini state. Let us not forget that it was Azerbaijani forces who invaded the ethnic Armenian region of Nargorno Karabakh, originally known by its Armenian name 'Artsakh', when the predominantly Armenian population of the region declared independence, based on the same self-determination given to Kosovo, around the time of collapse of the Soviet Union. Democracy means freedom of choice. In the case of Nagorno Karabakh that means independence.

According to Turkey’s Sabah paper, this trigger-happy Aliev’s speaking was perceived by Ankara just as a bluff. “Our wish is not to close doors, but to provide solving in talks,” told Sabah’s correspondent a Turkish official. In Armenian Aliev is famous as of liar for his several wars threatens.

Whenever I hear Aliyev threaten Armenia with the use of his military I remember Saddam Hussein's threats of unleashing "Mother of all Battles" with his million-strong "Mother of all armies", what he got instead was the Mother of all defeats. I thing Aliyev is itching for another Mother of all Lessons form Artsakh. The Azeri warmonger, Aliyev, thinks buying expensive armaments also buys him a fighting army. Armenians are itching for this Azeri amateur to bring it on, if it weren't for the unnecessary loss of innocent lives on both sides and the destruction that would ensue. Turkey should tell his little brother to shut up, and stop make a fool out of himself.

Good. War comments shouldn't be made so lightly and with no response from the other side.
