ISTANBUL — Daily News with wires

Police have rescued a 12-year-old girl from Syria who was married to a middle aged man in a “bridewealth” exchange after she informed her parents that she had been raped and was forced to use drugs.

The girl, with initials B.A., was handed over to Abdülhakim Doğan in the eastern province of Şanlıurfa for 12,000 Turkish Liras, which was paid to the family in two installments. Daily Radikal reported that 40-year-old Doğan has had 38 criminal convictions against his name prior to his recent arrest for raping and forcing porn and drugs on his wife.

After B.A. informed her family about the way she was being treated, her mother and father traveled from Syria to Şanliurfa with a translator where they met with police and reported the crimes that had been inflicted on their daughter.

B.A.’s family explained they had handed their daughter over in a bridewealth exchange to who they thought was a good doctor. “Where we come from, when your daughter turns 12, you can hand her over in a bride wealth exchange. Abdulhakim came to our house and introduced himself as a man of faith who prayed five times a day. This is why we chose him for our daughter,” B.A.’s parents told the police.

According to the parents, they had no idea how their daughter was being treated until they received a phone call from her last week begging for them to come and save her. Following the reports, police carried out an operation at Doğan’s house in Şanlıurfa where B.A. was taken back to her family and Doğan was arrested.

During these investigations in Şanlıurfa, hundreds of other brides from Syria have been found, daily Sabah has reported. According to Sabah, in the Harran and Akçakale regions of Şanlıurfa, “bridewealth” exchanges range from 5,000 to 35,000 liras. In these cases, once a Syrian bride marries in Turkey, she is eligible to apply for Turkish citizenship after three years.

But he said he prayed 5 times a day!!!! Shouldn't THAT be enough proof that he is a good man? What more did the parents need to know? Praying 5 times a day tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about a man's character. RIGHT?

This is disgusting! She is 12 years old!!!! What sort of parents would 'sell' their 12 year old anyway. Im sorry but this comment about 'where we come from you hand your 12 year old daughter over to an older man for money' is a load of rubbish! they should be locked up along with the peodophile! Its about time some of these areas start moving into this century!

This is disgusting. Everyone involved in this disgrace are disgusting. Parents, pedophiles, who married the monster to this child? Was she married here in Turkey? How can this be? Do the laws here allow an old man to be a legal pedophile in the form of buying a little girl for his own pleasures as long as he marries her? Something is not right with this picture...

My in-laws are from Akçakale, and this happens all the time, people go to Syria to find a wife, many have 2nd or 3rd wives in Syria because it is so near. These people regard Nikah as more important than state marriage, and will marry their own daughters off for huge sums of money and gold well before they are 18 to men much much older than them. The are very religous people and Akçakale & Harran are more like 6.C Arabia than the rest of Turkey. Everyone knows its going on and no one does anything about it. Daughters are brainwashed into believing this is their destiny to be sold, have many many children to men much older than them. There are also no or very few organisations to help those or educate any different in that area. Arabic is more widely spoken than even Turkish and alot of them are illerate.

Generally speaking, 12-year old girls are not mature enough for marriage, either psychologically or physically. Whatever one's religious beliefs, one must realise that to give away one's 12-yr old daughter in marriage, for whatever reason on earth, is simply outrageous child abuse. When one's faith or social tradition makes claims that are obviously irrational, one must make intelligent enquiries to examine the basis on which such assertions are made. The rest is up to the individual conscience; yet certainly children must not suffer because of the parents' religious or social beliefs. The evil of child abuse is immediately known to all and does not depend on any religious faith or social custom.

dear, concerned, "geoff" - at least the turkish state is actively doing something against this kind of incident, as this arrest shows - all while constantly increasing numbers of sexually abused children appear on a weekly basis within the holy catholic church. nobody has been arrested or excommunicated in the oh so advanced, just western world. so please spare us with your "insider knowledge" about "political figures" who "regard it normal". there are grown ups here - quote your sources to prove your claim or get a life.

How about the parents who sold this poor little girl as a package of meat??? They should be punished also. Where are the Human Rights watchdogs and Women Rights to voice their outrage!!! This is a disgrace that women and little girls in 21 century are still being treated like merchandise and sex objects for a bag of coins for the pleasure of old pedophiles... Totally disgusting and repulsive.

This sale of 12 yrs old girls may be legal in Syria but Turkish man who buys the girl lives in Turkey and responsible to Turkish law. They should know better. If we want to stop rape of children from other countries we can not show merci to these sexual maniac monsters. Ergun Tok

Wow! 12 year olds being sold in the streets to middle aged drug addicts, out in the open and on the books, and we get no comments, except a caution that it is a cherished fantasy of the government. And yet topics such as Armenia and the you know what that never happened, and the comment battles run on for days. Like they would ask us in primary school, "Chrildren, what does this tell us about Turks?" Where is this headed?

@Geoff- I cannot understand what you mean! Do you want to say that, if "certain high political figures" regard this horrible crime against female children as "normal", we all have to look away and let the sacrifices go on?? Those high political figures should be locked away for life, after torturing them, together with the paedophilians, because they have no respect for human life themselves.

Parents who sell girl children are equally as guilty of child abuse as the person who buys them. Government must enforce laws that protect women and girls from being being bought and sold like farm animals, to be used and abused by others. The sad part is that there is no moral outrage by a society that is supposedly so. This is a national disgrace.

What are they doing selling their daughter to someone based only on the man's own testimony? How stupid is it not to ask for references and inquire with friends and neighbors? If you're going to treat your daughter as if she's not much more than livestock, the least you can do is make absolutely certain you sent her to a good home.

we must be very careful about making comments about child brides, there are certain high political figuures that regard it normal.

So, if this 12 year old child...let's not call her a "bride", had lived here for 3 years she could have applied for citizenship, is that right? What did her parents think would happen to her if married off to a 40 year old paedophile? Did they think she would be given Barbie dolls to play with? I hope this man, and those caught with children as wives are prosecuted as paedophiles and given appropriate jail sentences. This should mean at least 50 years based on the fact that a girl of 15 was given 10 for shouting a few words. Will there be justice?
