Turkish Defense Minister İsmet Yılmaz has revealed that more soldiers passed away after committing suicide than were killed in attacks in the last 10 years. Responding to a parliamentary question from Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) deputy Altan Tan, Yılmaz stated that 601 soldiers in the Turkish Army were killed in attacks, fights, ambushes and harassment fires between Jan. 1, 2002 and Dec. 31, 2012.

In the same period, the number of soldiers who committed suicide was 965. “A different pattern has not been determined in suicidal tendencies in the Turkish Army compared to other civil [groups],” the statement read.

In response to another parliamentary question, Yılmaz claimed the Defense Ministry was currently not carrying out any work to end the nation’s obligatory military service.

JIM My Father, who served in WWII, said that his generation didn't have time for "Post Traumatic Stress" etc, because they were busy trying to support their families. The voluntary army of the US has many who were not right to begin with, and stress of service only heightened their problems. TURK We are "soft" the World over. You are part of a generation who thinks that the sun and moon revolve around them. It was not politically correct to award achievement, and you reap what you sow.

The US Military has a near identical problem. Much of this based on history from World War 2 is in part due to the lack of good leadership in battles or operations. As long as poor leaders stay in place, more will die needlessly. Government and less than honest comments create disillusionment to these soldiers. The final part is a serious lack of mental health services for these soldiers. The USA had the same causes as Turkey.

"Yılmaz claimed the Defense Ministry was currently not carrying out any work to end the nation’s obligatory military service" nor Should they, Suicide is common in all armed forces. Including the American one. Everyday 22 US veterans kill them selves. 325 US soldiers killed them selves while in duty just in 2012. Yes, many people are far to sheltered from reality to serve in the armed forces, We are used to comfort and luxury, they can't deal with it and go in to extreme depression.
