Turkey’s nationalist leader has joined condemnation of a vandalism attack at the headquarters of Hürriyet daily newspaper, calling it “very awful.”

Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Devlet Bahçeli called Hürriyet’s editor-in-chief Sedat Ergin on Sept. 7 and voiced his sadness over the attack.

Bahçeli added the number of these kinds of attacks had recently increased.

“Having such an attack last night at a time when an incident, which is very important for our country, took place is very awful,” Bahçeli told Ergin over the telephone.

Hürriyet’s headquarters in Istanbul was attacked by around 150 pro-government protesters early Sept. 7, hours after a deadly terrorist attack in Turkey’s southeast. The group attacked security personnel at the outer gate of the building in Istanbul’s Bağcılar district before forcing their way to the door, pelting it with stones.
