Six out of 10 Germans are opposed to Turkey joining the European Union, a survey published on Sunday showed, as Chancellor Angela Merkel embarked on a two-day visit to the country. Sixty percent of those surveyed in the Emnid poll for the Bild am Sonntag weekly said they were against Ankara gaining membership of the EU bloc. Thirty percent said they were in favor, the rest undecided.

In addition, 57 percent said Turkey’s growing economic and military strength was a matter of concern for them, with 35 percent welcoming Ankara’s increasing clout. Merkel was due to set off later Sunday on a trip to Turkey that will include a visit to German troops on the Syrian border, a speech at a Turkish-German business conference, as well as high-level political talks. On Monday, she will meet both President Abdullah Gül and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Ahead on the trip, she said in her weekly podcast she was in favor of opening a “new chapter” in Turkey’s bid to join the EU, adding that discussions needed to move forward although she remained skeptical. “These negotiations have stalled a little recently and I am in favor of opening a new chapter in these talks so we can advance,” Merkel said, stressing that “a long path of negotiations lies ahead of us.”

“Although I am skeptical, I have approved the continuation of the membership discussions,” added the chancellor. Turkey’s efforts to join the EU have stalled in recent years and of the 35 so-called policy chapters EU candidates must negotiate, Turkey has opened talks on only 13 since formally applying for membership in 2005.

@turk uzan, don't pay attention to people like thessalonian, they are only here to write negative comments about turkey and turks. they have nothing else to do because everything is so perfect in their own country.. just ignore them, maybe some day they will go away...

@ Thessalonian, no it isn't, I provided both IMF and CIA numbers, you must have used "nominal GDP per capita" and not real GDP per capita. Maybe learn pay attention next time neighbor, with kind regards

@Turk Uzan. I did not make up these fugures. The number I quoted was taken from Wiki's site and I believe it represents the figures of 2011, while Greece's GDP per capita for the same year was $26,735. Regards

@ Thessolonian, also previously pointed out is the fact that Turkey has FAR lower living costs than European nations. Every time you comment, you shamelessly lie? Why neighbor? Seriously I would appreciate it if you could explain the reason for your lies? Does it make you feel better? Does it improve your economy? Search at the HDN search bar "French president Greece" have fun reading, for an honest economic comparison between Greece and Turkey, with REAL numbers from the IMF&CIA factbook

@ Thessolonian, will you stop "lying" neighbor, as I pointed out in the article about the French president visiting Greece for support NONE of your numbers are accurate or true, Maybe you should take a look?. You realize the real number are available on the internet both by the IMF and CIA ?? Turkey' GDP per capita = $15,000 (2012 est.) according to the CIA factbook, get over your self. Read the my comments in the other article for a cold shower. Stop spreading misinformation.

Recent survey's showed that up to 70% of the Turkish students in higher education are thinking of moving back to Turkey. Eventually most Turks will migrate back the ones that will stay will assimilate. Especially the newer generation is sick of having to prove them selves constantly. After 9/11 etc Europeans have become increasingly biased and hostile towards migrants especially Turks/Muslims. We used to be exotic, now we are "Muslims" potential extremist second class citizens. Sad but true

@ Rimon tree, actually the fact is that we haven't sent anyone, but that the Europeans requested it because of their shortage in the work force and unwillingness of most Europeans to do the "dirty Jobs" this was back in the 70's and migration practically stopped after 2000. Turkish growth is 1.7 AKA There won't be any Turks in Europe in a few generations, tens of thousands are migrating back to Turkey on a yearly basis especially the higher educated ones.
