Istanbul is bracing for another tense May Day as the iconic Taksim Square is under a police blockade to prevent any gathering of demonstrations. Police have started to use water cannons and tear gas around 8:50 a.m. local time as demonstrators started to gather in Beşiktaş. The European neighborhood is the rallying point of many unions and organizations, including the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), that have called to march to Taksim Square to defy the authorities’ ban.
