Jazz fans celebrate Jazz in Ramadan

Jazz musician and drummer Omar Hakim takes the stage at Istanbul’s traditional Jazz in Ramadan. ‘1001 faces of Orientalism’ exhibit is also open.

The Istanbul tradition of Jazz in Ramadan has returned with concerts to delight music fans throughout the holy month of fasting.

The events opened with concerts from Kerem Görsev and İlhan Erşahin, and will continue tonight with the Omar Hakim and the Trio of Oz at the Sakıp Sabancı Museum. There will also be a calligraphy exhibition accompanying the concert events.

The fourth Jazz in Ramadan event is being organized under the auspices of Tourism and Culture Minister Ömer Çelik.

Hakim’s band is set to play songs from Duke Ellington, Depeche Mode, Wayne Shorter, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Coldplay and Björk. Widely acclaimed for his versatility, technical prowess and groove, Hakim has collaborated with prominent artists including George Benson, Lionel Richie, Chaka Khan, Anita Baker, Bobby McFerrin, John Scofield, the Urban Knights, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, Jewel, J-Lo, D’Angelo, Mariah Carey and Madonna.

About Hakim

Hakim will be followed on July 29 with a concert from Norwegian pianist Jon Balke, who is known for his collaboration with the Magnetic North Orchestra.

Balke will also share the stage with kemençe player Neva Özgen.

On July 30, Kudsi Erguner will perform alongside Pierre Rigopoulos. The curtain will fall on the jazz event on Aug. 1 at the Nardis Jazz Club with Önder Focan’s “Swing a la Turca” project.

During the concerts in July, the Sabancı Museum’s “1001 faces of Orientalism” exhibition will also be open.
