A suspect has been detained in connection to an attack on two female Japanese tourists in Cappadocia that left one dead after being identified by the survivor as the alleged assailant, Doğan news agency reported Sept.10.

Nevşehir Gov. Mehmet Ceylan confirmed that one suspect had been detained over the investigation launched after Mai Kurkiharac and Hoshie Teramatsu were attacked while walking in the Zemi Valley during a trip to the Central Anatolian province of Nevşehir’s Göreme village. Kurkiharac died at the scene.

Ceylan said Teramatsu recognized the suspect, saying the incident would be clarified after other evidence is collected.

Forestry and Waterworks Minister Veysel Eroğlu visited Teramatsu and said her family would arrive in Turkey on Sept. 11.

The detained suspect, M.V.D, 27, had criminal records for sexual abuse and the use of drugs, according to daily Hürriyet.

Authorities declined to make any statement to the Hürriyet Daily News regarding their investigation on Sept. 10, saying the public prosecutor had told them “not to disclose any information to anyone.” The gendarmerie official also said that the public prosecutor would “soon” take a court decision to conduct a confidential investigation over the incident.

On Sept. 9, a group of tourists discovered Kurkiharac’s dead body, along with the injured Teramatsu, and immediately called local gendarmerie and medical teams. Teramatsu was transferred to the Nevşehir Public Hospital, where she was operated on. The operation was successful and Teramatsu’s situation is now stable, having been restored to consciousness, Anadolu Agency reported.

Officials from the Japanese Embassy to Ankara said the body of Kurkiharac had been brought to Ankara for an autopsy. The officials also said they were holding meetings with authorities concerning the repatriation of the dead woman’s body to Japan. Her family and the Japanese Foreign Ministry are also holding meetings over the issue.
Ceylan condemned the attack, vowing to find the perpetrators as soon as possible.

Why are the Hurriyet not reporting what's on all other Western front pages.... of the English family being shot ? Does this damage Turkey's image, yes it does, An American woman murdered,a Japanese & now an English family attacked one killed. No one in their right mind would come to Turkey on holiday when such things are happening.

And MEHMET UD wonders why he's known as the HDN's 'Resident Comedian'! Mehmet, the guy who shot the British woman in Muǧla had apparently been her gardener for 6 years, & they had also been in a relationship (as confirmed by the woman's son & mother, who the killer also shot & injured!). As for the guy held over the attack on the Japanese women, well apparently he's got previous for sexual offences! By blaming these attacks on an Iranian / Syrian conspiracy, you have quite clearly lost the plot!

@mehmet ud: nice try but bnlame the Jandarma. The Brits had filed a complaint with the local Jandarma, they'd interviewed the man and let him go. So then he killed his common-law partner (ther woman -- that's a nice traditional AKPli way of handling a woman!!) and shot her mother and son, who is in critical condition.

@Mehmed Ud, take a break. It is more likely that some crackpot was seeking revenge over the lost Olympic bid. Nut cases of that sort exist all over the planet. Blaming Iran and Assad just makes you appear foolish.

Agnes, I take it you're not a Yank? As one I know too many of these stories involving knives, and, no, not everyone gives over at once. Not saying it is, and not claiming to know how Japanese women act. THEN AGAIN, the confidentiality makes me wonder if it's not to hide the fact of a sexual assault. There certainly have been A LOT of assaults on tourists this year. Probably the AKP hatred of the non-Sunni world encourages it, and TC has deep resources of xenophobia cf. attacks on Roma, too.

What a bunch of pathetic attempts to blame AKP for everything again. Please grow up and try to better things instead of just worsening it. And what the hack is religious racism? Do you mean religion-ism because racism is forbidden in Islam? BTW, soem of you sound exactly like the way you say AKP is sounding. Complaining complaining complaining..
