The world's reputedly third oldest church, the Byzantine Başmelekler Church, or Taksiyarhon Church, was purchased by the Istanbul patriarchate on Sept. 10, the head priest of Halki Seminary, Professor Elpidophoros Lambriniadis, has announced.

The Başmelekler Church, built in 789 by Byzantine Emperor Constantine Porphyrogennetos, is located in the Trilye region of the Marmara province of Bursa. The church was put up for sale by its owner Teksen Construction for $400,000 back in 2007.

Lambriniadis told Anatolia news agency that the Patriarchate completed the purchase of the "Church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel" on Sept. 10 and that the church was no longer derelict.

The patriarchate had the church, which lies in ruins, surrounded with a fence and a gate. "There are three keys to the gate," Lambriniadis said. "We hold two of the keys and gave the Kumyaka village the remaining key so that those who wish to visit the church would not be turned away."

Lambriniadis said they planned to restore the church, which was part of "the common heritage of Turkey," in the shortest amount of time possible. "We wish to restore this historical structure to its past glory so that it can take its place among the other wonderful historical buildings that adorn our city of Bursa," he said.

Kumyaka village head Ramiz Batmaz said the fact that Lambriniadis gave a key to the church to them showed the patriarchate's trust in them. "From now on we will control the visits to the church and help our guests.”

The church still has vaults situated on four walls and an ascending dome, a plan that has been used since early Christianity. Two other examples of this plan also existed in Istanbul, according to reports.

Turk Uzan and Ertan Selimoğlu, who knows, History repeats itself and the Greeks may plan to return to their homelands someday in the future. So do not worry, it is only a strategic and not a tactical plan at this stage !!!

I think they get money not from legally. They can not get money by only aid of people. Turkish Administrators must investigate the way of money. In Greece ,there are many unrestored or destroyed mosques. In the area of pkk treatment in Greece, Lavrion ,Greece government had declared Turkish Zones as military zones that nobody can visit those places freely, in Western Trace.. In 1950's ,they destroy many mosques ,then they built road on them, you can read in GecePostası news week archives.

They plan to "restore" the church "in the shortest amount of time possible". So I suggest anyone wanting to see this historic monument see it as soon as posisble. If this goes the same way as EVERY "restoration" in Turkey, the church won't be worth tuppence as an ancient monument when they are done ruining it! In Europe, such plans would be classed as a criminal act, as vandalism directed against a protected monument. But in Turkey no historical sites are properly protected.

In America, I had done much genealogy for Swedes and Finns...I found that a former Finnish Lutheran Church in a Massachusetts town had become a mosque. Also, we have many old churches which have been converted into shops.

1.Where did the Patriarch get the money from to pay for this 400 000 dollar ... who's going to pay for the restoration which is probably 10 times the amount? 2. Why did a construction company own it? 3. It should have been restored by the government and made in to a museum .. unless there is a big Christian population in the area that lack a church. 4. I don't get the reasoning behind this, they complain about not having enough students and open new schools at the same time etc?

How do you own and sell a Church? What a strange country we live in...

It will be restoring an heritage and a valuable past. Also, this landmark will be a significant gain for The Trilye Region as a hallmark.
