Syrian court sentences PKK member four year's imprisonment
DAMASCUS – Associated Press
Over the weekend a Syrian court sentenced a Syrian citizen of Kurdish descent to four years imprisonment after being convicted of belonging to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), sedition and harming relations with a friendly country, his lawyer said.
Anwar al-Buni, a lawyer and member of the Human Rights Association in Syria, said in a statement faxed to foreign news agencies posted in Syria, that Kaw Mohammad Hanan, 27, had been arrested earlier this year.
This was the first conviction in Syria of a member of the PKK, whose leader, Abdullah Öcalan, is currently imprisoned in Turkey. It appears to be an attempt by Syria to further improve its relations with Turkey, relations marred by tensions for much of the 1980s and 1990s when Turkey accused Syria of harboring PKK members, including Öcalan.
Syrian Kurds have long complained that they lack basic rights and have said the government neglects areas of northern Syria where they live. There are about 1.5 million Kurds in Syria, including about 160,000 who have been denied citizenship of Syria, a nation of 18.5 million people.
