Report reveals schism
A parliamentary commission formed to investigate claims of cronyism at Samsun 19 Mayıs University has revealed the rift between the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) when it comes to Turkey's tertiary education.
The CHP described the report as biased, with CHP Ankara deputy Yakup Kepenek saying, “The commission went beyond it's mandated authority.” CHP members of the commission said they would note their objections in the report.
The report criticizes the managerial structure of universities and accuses the Higher Education Board (YÖK) and universities of being conservative strongholds closed to any move towards change. The report said a constitutional amendment was needed to revitalize universities but that under present conditions such a move was unlikely to succeed.
